Swakopmund With Children: Family Activities
Swakopmund is a compact, easy town for families, with a seafront to walk, a museum, a crystal gallery and wildlife outings within an hour or two. Plan outings for the morning, because fog is common early and the coast stays cool, and pack a warm layer for everyone. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$).
Living Desert tour
Living Desert Adventures has a child rate of about N$550 for ages 12 and under, against about N$1,000 for adults (the 2025/26 rates, with park fees included). Pick-up is in Swakopmund at around 08:00 and the tour is back by 12:00 to 13:00. The operator asks that young children are well behaved and supervised. Only the guides handle the animals, and children are there to look. Check the operator’s page for current rules before booking.
Swakopmund Museum
The museum stands on the beachfront near the lighthouse and the Mole. It was founded in 1951 by Dr Alfons Weber. Opening hours are about 10:00 to 17:00 daily and entry is about N$30, so check both before you go. The museum has a listing on museums.com.na .
Kristall Galerie
This gallery opened in 1998 and shows a quartz cluster about 3 m high and weighing about 14 tonnes, found in 1985 at the Otjua mine near Karibib. It is an easy short stop on a wet or foggy morning, and an entry fee applies.
Dolphin and seal cruise
Catamaran trips leave from the Walvis Bay Waterfront, about 35 km south of Swakopmund, and many operators collect guests in town. The morning trip lasts around 3 to 3.5 hours. Dolphins are often seen and seals and pelicans often come close to the boat. Children should watch from their seats and should never feed or touch the animals.
Dune 7 and sandboarding
Dune 7 is near Walvis Bay. The climb is steep and takes about 25 to 50 minutes, so it suits older children who like a challenge. Lie-down sandboarding on the dunes is the usual choice for younger riders. Ask each operator for its age limits before you book.
Cape Cross seals
Cape Cross is about 120 km north of Swakopmund, so it is a long outing with small children. The colony is very large and the smell is strong. Everyone must stay on the walkways and keep clear of the low barrier. Park entry is free for children aged 8 and under and reduced for ages 9 to 15, with fees set by the ministry.
Beach and the Mole
The seafront near the Mole is good for a stroll. The Atlantic is cold with strong shorebreak and rip currents, so children should only paddle where lifeguards are on duty and always under an adult’s eye.
Not available
The National Marine Aquarium has been closed since November 2023 for structural repairs so leave it out of your plans.
