Punta Gorda Long Weekend Itinerary
Punta Gorda has no organised multi-day tours. What it offers is a good base for a two to four day stay, with a compact downtown, a harbor, and islands, ranchland and state parks within an hour or so by car. This page lays out a simple plan you can book yourself. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so check airline and lodging storm policies if you travel in that window.
Where to stay
The Wyvern Hotel is at 101 E Retta Esplanade, in the middle of the downtown walking area, and has a rooftop restaurant and bar called Perch 360. Sunseeker Resort Florida Gulf Coast, now part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, sits across the Peace River in Port Charlotte rather than in Punta Gorda. Punta Gorda Airport is about 3 miles east of downtown and Southwest Florida International is about 40 miles south, so check airline schedules for either. A rental car makes days two and three much easier.
Day one: downtown
Start with the murals. More than 30 historic murals are spread through downtown, and the free Otocast app gives self-guided audio. Walk the flat Harborwalk, which is about 2.4 miles, then visit the Military Heritage Museum at 900 W Marion Ave, open Tuesday to Saturday 10 to 4. End the day with a King Fisher Fleet sunset cruise from Fishermen’s Village, starting at about $42 for 1.5 hours.
Day two: islands
Take the King Fisher Fleet Cabbage Key cruise, from about $62 for 7.5 hours. From December to April the Boca Grande cruise costs the same and takes the same time. Both are long days on the water, so bring sun protection and a light jacket. Cayo Costa is not an option right now, because its ferry service and overnight stays are suspended and the Cayo Costa cruise is not running.
Day three: inland
Ride a 90-minute swamp buggy with Babcock Ranch Eco Tours at 8502 FL-31, booked through FareHarbor or 800-500-5583. Afterward visit the Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens at 5827 Riverside Dr. Adults pay $21, and the gardens are open daily 9 to 4 from October to May.
Optional extra day
Drive about 30 to 45 minutes to the Edison and Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers. Recent listings show about $25 for adults, so check prices before you go. Other options are the Gulf beaches at Englewood and Stump Pass, about 35 to 45 minutes away.
Camping and overnight trips
Overnight camping at Cayo Costa State Park is not available while the park’s ferry and overnight service are suspended. Plan hotel nights in Punta Gorda and make the islands day cruises.
