Day Trips from Punta Gorda, Florida
Punta Gorda sits on Charlotte Harbor, and the best day outings go to islands, Gulf beaches and state parks within about an hour. A rental car is the practical way to reach most of them. Drive times below are approximate from downtown. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so check park and ferry closures after storms.
Boca Grande and Gasparilla Island
Boca Grande is about 45 to 60 minutes away by road on Gasparilla Island. The state park on the island takes $3 per vehicle. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum reopened on 5 May 2025 after about eight months closed, and it is listed as open November to May, Monday to Saturday 11 to 4 and Sunday 12 to 4. The causeway toll into the island is about $6, so carry a card or cash. Boca Grande Pass is known for tarpon in spring and early summer. From December to April you can skip the drive and take the King Fisher Fleet Boca Grande cruise from about $62 for 7.5 hours.
Englewood Beach and Stump Pass
Englewood Beach and Stump Pass Beach State Park are on Manasota Key, about 35 to 45 minutes away, and they are the nearest sandy Gulf beaches. Stump Pass reopened on 19 September 2025 after Hurricane Milton, and parking is about $3 per vehicle. Stingrays are common in shallow Gulf water, so shuffle your feet when you wade in.
Cabbage Key by boat
King Fisher Fleet’s Cabbage Key cruise starts at about $62 and lasts 7.5 hours. Cabbage Key Inn reopened after Hurricane Ian and has been reported serving daily, so check its hours before you sail.
Edison and Ford Winter Estates
The estates in Fort Myers are about 30 to 45 minutes away. Recent listings show admission of about $25 for adults, $20 for teens and $15 for children 6 to 12, with under 6 free. Check current prices before you go.
Myakka River State Park
Myakka River State Park is near Sarasota, about 45 to 60 minutes away. Its canopy walkway tower and bird walk were announced closed from 5 May 2026 with no reopening date, so do not plan around them. Check the park page, and confirm that the Myakka Princess airboat is running before you drive out.
Cayo Costa is not a day trip right now
Cayo Costa State Park lost its ferry and tram service, and overnight stays were unavailable as of July 2025. King Fisher Fleet’s Cayo Costa cruise is also not available, so the island is reachable by private boat only. Do not cross open water by kayak or paddleboard, and never try to paddle through Boca Grande Pass.
