Self-Guided Walks in Suva
Walking Here Means Going Self-Guided
Central Division has no walking-tour company worth naming, so the best walks are ones you plan yourself. The Suva loop below links the main sights on foot and takes about half a day with stops. Do it in daylight, carry little cash and keep your valuables out of sight. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$).
The Suva Colonial and Waterfront Loop
Start at Suva Municipal Market, at Usher Street and Rodwell Road. It opens early, is closed on Sunday and is free to enter. Produce and flowers fill the ground floor, and kava and dry goods are upstairs. From there head to Victoria Parade, the colonial strip, where the Government Buildings clock tower, the Old Town Hall and the Carnegie Library line the road. Albert Park faces the Grand Pacific Hotel, which opened in 1914 and reopened in 2014. Charles Kingsford Smith landed the Southern Cross in that park in 1928.
End in Thurston Gardens, free to enter, with a clock tower and bandstand dating from 1918. The Fiji Museum stands inside, open 09:00 to 16:30 daily. An overseas adult pays FJ$20 and a child FJ$10, and a guided entry costs FJ$30 for adults.
The Seawall
Queen Elizabeth Drive has a seafront promenade that locals use. Walk it by day, and carry water.
Damodar Arts Village Island Tour
In Pacific Harbour, Damodar Arts Village on Hibiscus Drive offers an Island Tour, a heritage walk through the recreated village. Contact the village on +679 229 9049 for the schedule. The village reopened in October 2025.
Colo-i-Suva Trails
Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, about 20 minutes from central Suva, has trails marked with arrows, and rangers lead guided walks. The fee is about FJ$5 for overseas adults and FJ$1 for children. Go in daylight, not alone, keep to the main paths and do not resist a robbery. Do not stay until dusk. The park closed after heavy rain in May 2026, so check that it is open first. The pools near the rope swings can be slippery, so wear proper footwear.
Weather and Comfort
Suva is on the wet windward side, so carry a rain jacket. Flooding and road closures can follow heavy rain. Cyclone season normally runs 1 November to 30 April, though cyclones can occur at any time. Most shops and offices are closed on Sunday, so Saturday is the better day for the market.
