Family Days in Suva and Pacific Harbour
Planning Family Days
Central Division is Suva and its surroundings plus Pacific Harbour, Navua and Beqa, not the resort islands of the west. Suva is a working city, so family days here mix museum time with river and forest outings. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$). Most shops and offices in Suva close on Sunday, though large hotel restaurants stay open.
Fiji Museum and Thurston Gardens
The Fiji Museum sits in Thurston Gardens on Cakobau Road in Suva and is open 09:00 to 16:30 every day. An overseas child aged 2 to 15 pays FJ$10 and an overseas adult FJ$20. The centrepiece is Ratu Finau, a 13-metre double-hulled drua, or traditional canoe, built in the early 1900s. Children also see the rudder of HMS Bounty and archaeological material about 3,700 years old. The gardens are free, with royal palms, water lilies and lawns to run on. Check the opening before you go, as a gallery renovation was reported nearly complete in early 2026.
Navua River Bamboo Rafting and Magic Waterfall
Discover Fiji Tours in Navua lists bamboo rafting, river canoeing and a trip to the Magic Waterfall, with a village visit and lovo lunch on the Jewel of Fiji day. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Ask the operator for the current child price when you call +679 905 0902.
Colo-i-Suva Pools
The pools fed by Waisila Creek cost about FJ$1 for an overseas child and FJ$5 for an adult. The area near the rope swings can be slippery, so children need proper footwear and close supervision. Go in daylight, never alone, keep to the main paths, carry little and do not resist a robbery. The park closed after heavy rain in May 2026, so check that it is open before you set out.
Damodar Arts Village
The village in Pacific Harbour reopened in October 2025. Its cultural show includes meke dancing and Beqa firewalking, and there is a Starlight Cinema, an open-air screen. Ask the village for times and ticket prices before you travel.
Upper Navua Gorge for Active Families
Rivers Fiji takes children from about age 8 on its Class II to III raft trip, which costs about FJ$440 to 460 and lasts from about 06:45 to 18:00. It suits active families who are happy with a long day on the water. Check river levels after heavy rain.
What to Skip With Young Children
The Beqa shark dive is for certified divers only. TerraTrek’s self-drive 4WD buggies require drivers aged 17 or over, so they do not suit young children.
Practical Tips
Carry cash for market stalls and village visits. Suva sits on the wet windward side, and heavy rain brings flooding and road closures. VAT is 12.5 percent, and a 5 percent Tourism Services Tax may be added to larger operators’ prices from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027. Use fully licensed operators for any water activity, because rip tides run along reefs and river estuaries.
