Swakopmund Activities: Dunes, Sky and Sea
Swakopmund sits between the Atlantic and the Namib dune belt, so most activities here involve sand, sky or the animals of the coast. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$), which are pegged one to one to the South African rand, and rand notes are widely accepted. Drive on the left. Fog is common in the morning and often burns off by midday, so pack warm layers even in summer.
Sandboarding
Lie-down and stand-up sandboarding both run on the dune belt and are sold by the town’s adventure operators. Speeds are fast, so ask the operator about age limits, boards and protective gear when you book.
Quad biking
Quads may only use the demarcated central dune belt between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay, entered through corridors near Langstrand, Dolfynstrand and Dune 7. Machines must be licensed and riders must wear helmets. Independent riders need a free dune permit and sticker from the MEFT office in Swakopmund or Walvis Bay, or through a quad operator. Gravel plains, the Swakop River, fenced or vegetated ground and the beach south of the river are closed to quads. A guided ride is the simple option because the operator handles permits and routes. The UK government advises checking that your travel insurance covers quad biking and sandboarding, see its Namibia safety page .
Tandem skydiving
Ground Rush Adventures flies from the Swakopmund airfield. Jumps are offered from about 10,000, 12,000 or 15,000 ft, giving roughly 35, 45 or 60 seconds of freefall. The weight limit is about 100 kg, and anyone under 18 needs written parental consent.
Living Desert tour
Living Desert Adventures runs half-day tours into the dunes of the Dorob National Park. Pick-up in Swakopmund is at 08:00 to 08:15 and the tour ends between 12:00 and 13:00, in English or German. The 2025/26 rate was about N$1,000 per adult and N$550 per child aged 12 and under, with park fees included and payment in cash on the day. The guides look for the “Little 5”: usually the Namib sand gecko, Peringuey’s adder, the Namaqua chameleon and the shovel-snouted lizard, plus a fifth that varies. Sightings are not guaranteed. Current details are on the operator’s own site .
Hot-air ballooning
Hot Air Ballooning Namibia CC flies over the dunes from Swakopmund. Allow about 4 hours including transfers, with about 45 minutes in the air. Flights are often cancelled for weather, so keep a spare morning in your schedule.
Dune paragliding
Paragliding is offered on the dunes south of town. Ask your accommodation for a licensed operator and check what insurance covers.
At the beach
The Atlantic is cold, with strong shorebreak and rip currents, so swim only between the flags where lifeguards are on duty, never alone. Lifeguards are mainly at the Mole beach in the summer season.
