Swakopmund Tours: Desert, Seals, Townships
Swakopmund has no commercial boat harbour and the best wildlife is spread along 120 km of coast, so most attraction tours here are pick-up tours: a guide collects you in town, drives you out and brings you back. Prices are in Namibian dollars (N$) unless an operator quotes in US dollars. Always check an operator’s current rates and cancellation terms before paying.
Living Desert tours
Living Desert Adventures collects guests in Swakopmund at 08:00 to 08:15 and finishes between 12:00 and 13:00. Tours run in English and German. The 2025/26 rate was about N$1,000 per adult and N$550 per child aged 12 and under, with Dorob park fees included. Pay in cash on the day. Guides track the small desert animals of the Namib dunes, such as the sand gecko, Peringuey’s adder and the Namaqua chameleon, and they handle any animals themselves. Tommy’s Living Desert Tours also appears in listings, with tours running from about 08:00 to 13:30. The operator’s website carries the latest times and rules.
Dolphin and seal cruises from Walvis Bay
Catamaran cruises leave from the Walvis Bay Waterfront, about 35 km south, and many operators pick up guests in Swakopmund. Morning departures are usually at about 08:30 to 09:00 and the trip lasts roughly 3 to 3.5 hours. The route covers the lagoon and Pelican Point. Heaviside’s and bottlenose dolphins are seen on many trips, and seals and pelicans often come close to the boat, but sightings are not guaranteed. Many boats serve oysters and sparkling wine. Mola Mola Safaris and Levo Tours appear in listings. Keep your hands to yourself when animals approach.
Pelican Point kayaking
Kayak trips to the seal colony at Pelican Point also start in Walvis Bay. A 4x4 or boat transfer of about 40 km takes the group out, and the outing takes about 5 hours, about half of it on the water. Groups are small, from about 2 to 12 people. Seals often swim up to kayaks by themselves, and the rule is to stay calm and never touch them. Eco Marine Kayak Tours and Pelican Point Kayaking are named in the Info Namibia listing .
Sandwich Harbour by 4x4
Sandwich Harbour, where the dunes meet the lagoon and the sea, is about 55 km south of Walvis Bay, which makes it roughly 85 to 90 km from Swakopmund. Since 1 April 2026 a concession operates the site and unguided self-drive visits are not allowed, so go with a registered operator from Walvis Bay. Driving along the beach depends on the tide, so the guide sets the route and timing. See the Namibian Sun report for the background.
Cape Cross seal reserve
Cape Cross is about 120 km north of Swakopmund on the coastal C34 road and is open to guided and self-drive visitors. It is a very large Cape fur seal colony, with figures from tens of thousands to well over 100,000 animals, and the smell is strong. Opening hours are roughly 10:00 to 17:00, so check before you go. Stay on the walkways and do not cross the low barrier.
Township tours
Mondesa and the DRC are visited on guided township tours run by local operators. A typical listing is about US$80 per adult. Go with a local guide and only in daylight.
