Family Activities in Punta Gorda, Florida
Punta Gorda works well for families who like boats, wildlife and hands-on museums, but it has no ocean beach. The harbor is muddy, with oyster bars, stingrays and alligators nearby, so it is not a place for kids to swim. Sandy Gulf beaches are a short drive away at Englewood Beach and Boca Grande. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, and summer afternoons bring heat and lightning, so plan outdoor stops for the morning.
Military Heritage Museum
The museum is at 900 W Marion Ave and is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10 to 4. Admission is $18 for adults 15 and over, $14 for veterans and $10 for youth 5 to 14. Children under 5 and active-duty military are free. From May to July the flight simulators, virtual reality and a smokeless laser range run from 10 to 2. The building covers 17,000 square feet and holds more than 20,000 artifacts. It is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Peace River Wildlife Center
The center cares for native wildlife that cannot be released. Its education center and gift shop are at 3400 Ponce de Leon Pkwy, with hours around 11 to 4. Entry is free and donations are welcome. Hours can change while a new education center is being built, so check prwildlife.org before you drive over.
Swamp buggy at Babcock Ranch
The swamp buggy trip at 8502 FL-31 lasts 90 minutes. Adult fares are around $27, and child fares are best checked at booking through FareHarbor or 800-500-5583. Bring water and sun protection, and keep hands inside the buggy.
Alligator Creek Preserve
The preserve is at 10941 Burnt Store Rd and has about 4 miles of trails open from dawn to dusk. Entry is free. Visitor center hours vary, so call 941-575-5435 first. Watch for alligators near the water and stay on the trail.
Boat rides
The King Fisher Fleet Harbor Tour starts at about $42 and lasts 1.5 hours, which suits younger children better than the 3.5-hour nature cruise from about $52. In December, the Christmas Light Canal Cruise starts at about $37 for 1 or 2 hours.
Peace River Botanical and Sculpture Gardens
The gardens are at 5827 Riverside Dr and cover about 30 acres. Students 6 to 17 pay $10 and ages 0 to 5 are free, while adults pay $21 and seniors 65 and over pay $18. From October to May the gardens are open daily 9 to 4. From June to September they open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 to 2, and close on Mondays and 4 July. The last entry is 45 minutes before closing.
