Romantic Weekend in Punta Gorda, Florida
Punta Gorda suits a quiet couples weekend: sunset on the harbor, historic streets rebuilt after Hurricane Charley in 2004, and waterfront dinners. It is a calm Old Florida town, not a beach resort, so plan evenings on the water rather than days on the sand. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so check lodging storm policies if you book in that window.
Sunset cruise
King Fisher Fleet runs a Sunset Cruise from Fishermen’s Village at 1200 W Retta Esplanade. It starts at about $42 and lasts 1.5 hours, which is long enough to watch the light change over Charlotte Harbor without a full day on the water. Call 941-639-0969 for the current schedule, and book ahead on winter weekends when the town is busiest.
Dinner downtown
Perch 360 is the rooftop restaurant and bar at the Wyvern Hotel, 101 E Retta Esplanade. Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante is at 321 W Retta Esplanade, in a historic house with a courtyard, and serves dinner only. Fishermen’s Village has waterfront restaurants too, including Latitude 26 upstairs, though tenants change, so check before you book.
A stay with a resort feel
Sunseeker Resort Florida Gulf Coast, part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, is across the Peace River in Port Charlotte. The Wyvern Hotel is in downtown Punta Gorda and puts the restaurants and the harbor on your doorstep.
A free evening walk
Walk the tree-lined Retta Esplanade at dusk and continue to the pier at Gilchrist Park, which is free. The Harborwalk is flat and paved, so it works at a slow pace and in sandals.
A Boca Grande day
For a change of scene, spend a day on Gasparilla Island. From December to April, King Fisher Fleet’s Boca Grande cruise starts at about $62 for 7.5 hours. You can also drive, which takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes, and Gasparilla Island State Park charges $3 per vehicle. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum is open November to May, Monday to Saturday 11 to 4 and Sunday 12 to 4.
Water safety for couples
The harbor and river are not for wading or swimming. Alligators live in the area, oyster bars are sharp, and summer afternoons bring lightning. Keep evenings on the pier or the boat deck, and head indoors when thunder sounds.
