Things to Do in Punta Gorda, Florida
Punta Gorda is a flat, walkable harbor city in Charlotte County, Florida, where the Peace River meets Charlotte Harbor. It is not a beach resort. There is no surf and no ocean beach in town, and the nearest Gulf beaches are about 30 miles west. Winter, from November to April, is the busy season. Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, so check closures after storms. All prices are in US dollars.
Cruises from Fishermen’s Village
King Fisher Fleet runs its cruises from Fishermen’s Village at 1200 W Retta Esplanade, and the office number is 941-639-0969. The operator lists “from” prices only: the Harbor Tour and the Sunset Cruise start at $42 for 1.5 hours, the Peace River Nature Cruise starts at $52 for 3.5 hours, and the Christmas Light Canal Cruise starts at $37 for 1 or 2 hours. The long Cabbage Key and Boca Grande cruises start at $62 and take about 7.5 hours. Boca Grande sails from December to April. The Cayo Costa cruise is not running after hurricane damage.
Fishermen’s Village itself
The village is a pier-style complex of shops, waterfront restaurants and a marina built over Charlotte Harbor. It is a place to browse and eat, not a beach. Restaurant tenants change often, so check before you plan a meal around one. Latitude 26 is one of the upstairs waterfront restaurants.
Swamp buggy at Babcock Ranch
Babcock Ranch Eco Tours is at 8502 FL-31. The main trip is a 90-minute swamp buggy eco-tour across ranchland and swamp, and a walking tour is also offered. The Gator Shack restaurant is on site. Book through FareHarbor or call 800-500-5583. Adult fares are around $27 on booking sites, and tours run from about 9 am into the early afternoon, so check the schedule. Wildlife sightings depend on the day and are never guaranteed.
Bikes and a taproom
The city is flat, and TEAM Punta Gorda lends free yellow bikes for the paved Harborwalk and city paths. Ask TEAM Punta Gorda on 941-637-8326 where to collect one. Peace River Beer Company is at 1732 Steadley Ave and has a taproom, so check its hours and menu before you go.
Water and wildlife safety
Alligators live in fresh and brackish water around the harbor and river, so keep your distance and never feed them. Oyster bars are sharp, and in the warm months open cuts can pick up Vibrio bacteria, so wear water shoes and keep wounds dry. Shuffle your feet in shallow water to warn stingrays. Summer afternoons bring lightning, so get off the water when you hear thunder. The harbor is muddy and is not a swimming spot. For sand and surf, drive to Englewood Beach or Boca Grande.
