Romantic Swakopmund: Jetty Sunsets, Balloons
Swakopmund suits couples who like slow mornings, sea air and big empty landscapes. The town is compact and easy to walk, with palm-lined streets, German bakeries and a seafront made for evening strolls. Fog often covers the coast in the morning and tends to clear by midday, so bring warm layers for sunrise plans and dinner outdoors.
Sunset on the jetty and the Mole
The Swakopmund jetty runs about 260 m into the Atlantic. A wooden jetty was finished in 1905, and the present iron and concrete one was begun in 1912 and reopened to walkers in 2010 after restoration. A seafood restaurant sits at the far end, so a sunset stroll can finish with dinner over the water, and booking a table ahead is sensible in the high season. The Gondwana Collection history of the jetty gives the background. The Mole, a breakwater begun in 1899, makes a second walk along the beachfront, and the lighthouse beside it can be admired from outside. The Atlantic is cold with rip currents, so keep to the paths and the promenade rather than the water.
Sunrise balloon flight
Hot Air Ballooning Namibia CC flies over the dune belt at dawn. Plan on about 4 hours in all including transfers, with about 45 minutes in the air. Flights are often cancelled for weather, so leave a spare morning. Pack a jacket because it is cold before the sun is up.
Sandwich Harbour
Sandwich Harbour is where the dunes meet the lagoon and the sea, and a sunset or full day tour there gives some of the most dramatic scenery on the coast. It lies about 55 km south of Walvis Bay, roughly 85 to 90 km from Swakopmund. Since 1 April 2026 a concession has run the site and visitors need a registered operator from Walvis Bay, as the Namibian Sun reported. The tide decides the route along the beach.
Scenic flights
Several operators at Swakopmund and Walvis Bay offer coastal flights lasting 15 to 30 minutes, showing the dunes, the shore and the lagoon from the air. Ask about weather and passenger limits when you enquire.
Where to stay
The old town has small guesthouses in a German colonial style, within walking distance of the sea, the bakeries and the restaurants. Look for rooms with a sea view or a garden and ask whether breakfast is included. Compare stays on Booking.com .
