Walking Punta Gorda: Harborwalk and Murals
Punta Gorda is one of the easier Florida towns to explore on foot. The streets are flat, the downtown core is compact, and the waterfront has paved paths. Winter mornings are the most comfortable time to walk. In summer, go early, carry water, and plan to be indoors by the afternoon, when heat and lightning build.
The Harborwalk
The Harborwalk is about 2.4 miles of flat, paved path that links Fishermen’s Village, Gilchrist Park and Laishley Park. You can walk all of it in an hour or so with stops, or take one section. Parking is available at the parks and at Fishermen’s Village. Stay on the path, because the shoreline has oyster bars and alligators live in the harbor and river.
Mural audio walk
More than 30 historic murals are spread across downtown. The free Otocast app gives self-guided audio at each one, and it works all year. Begin near Marion Ave and follow the app’s order.
Guided mural walks
The Mural Society offers private guided walks from December to March. The price is $200 for up to 10 people, and extra guests are $10 each up to 18. Book directly with the society.
Historic streets
Retta Esplanade and Marion Ave make a good slow loop. Shade trees line the streets, and you pass historic homes, coffee shops and galleries. Carmelo’s Italian Ristorante at 321 W Retta Esplanade serves dinner in a historic house with a courtyard, which makes it a natural end to an evening stroll.
Linear Park
Linear Park is a paved path of about 1 mile that starts near Fishermen’s Village. It is flat and easy going for slow walkers and short outings.
Sunday at History Park
On Sunday mornings the Sunday Market at Punta Gorda History Park runs from 9 am to 1 pm. You can walk the grounds and see relocated buildings such as the Trabue Land Sales Office, the Price House and the Cigar Workers Cottage.
Free bikes
If you would rather ride, TEAM Punta Gorda lends free yellow bikes. Ask TEAM Punta Gorda on 941-637-8326 where to pick one up and what the rules are.
Practical tips
Wear a hat and sun protection, and bring water. Closed-toe shoes or water shoes help near the shore. Charlotte County Transit has no fixed-route bus, but Dial-A-Ride is curb-to-curb, needs a reservation and is open to the general public in the county.
