Family Activities in Cancún
Cancún suits families who plan around the water. The best days combine a calm bay-side beach, one boat or museum outing and an early dinner. Prices are in Mexican pesos or US dollars as the operators quote them, and they are approximate unless an official site lists them.
Beaches for children
The beaches on the north side of the Hotel Zone face the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, and they are usually the only sensible choice for young children. These are Las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas, Caracol and Playa del Niño. They are still subject to flags and sargassum, and several were restricted on 13 May 2026, so check the flag colour on arrival: green is fine, yellow means caution and red means nobody swims. Do not take children into the water at the east-facing beaches (Gaviota Azul, Marlín, Chac Mool and Delfines). They face open surf and rip currents. Delfines is a good spot for sunrise photos from the sand, with the Cancún sign behind you.
Boats and aquariums
MUSA glass-bottom boat. This trip over the Punta Nizuc sculpture gallery costs US$58 from Cancún on the official site. It suits non-swimmers and small children, because everyone watches from the boat. Details are at musamexico.org .
Interactive Aquarium Cancún. It stands at La Isla, Km 12.5. Visit for the fish and shark exhibits and treat it as a viewing outing. Mexico bans shows and interactions with marine mammals, so skip any dolphin, sea lion or ray handling add-on.
Captain Hook pirate dinner cruise. The cruise lasts about 3.5 hours with sword fights and a cannon show. It leaves around 19:00 and has a pier fee of about US$15 on top.
Evenings and culture
Xoxi Cancún. The venue has a minimum age of 5, and children aged 5 to 11 pay 25 percent less than adults. It runs Tuesday to Saturday from 19:00 to 23:00, and the bar is open, so parents should plan who drives or rides back. It sits on the Puerto Morelos highway at Km 307.
Museo Maya and El Rey. These are short, cheap outings. The Museo Maya de Cancún at Km 16.5 and the San Miguelito ruins share one ticket at 210 MXN for foreign adults. El Rey, around Km 17 to 18, costs 75 MXN, and iguanas are commonly seen there. See INAH’s Museo Maya page .
Practical tips
- Pay in pesos; dollars work in the Hotel Zone but the rate is poor.
- Boulevard Kukulcán is a high-speed road with resort frontage and no continuous beach promenade, so ride the R-1 or R-2 city buses (about 12 MXN to the Hotel Zone, in cash) or take a taxi between beaches.
- Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November; check the National Hurricane Center before booking.
- Foreign visitors, children included, pay the Visitax tax of about 285 MXN each at visitax.gob.mx .
