Cancún Sightseeing, Ruins and Markets
Cancún sightseeing splits between the Hotel Zone and El Centro. The Hotel Zone has the museum and ruins along Boulevard Kukulcán, and downtown has the parks and markets. Fees below are in pesos and come from INAH, Mexico’s heritage institute, where noted.
Museo Maya de Cancún and San Miguelito
The museum is at Km 16.5 and opens Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30. A foreign adult pays 210 MXN under INAH Category I, and a Mexican visitor pays 105 MXN. The ticket also covers the San Miguelito ruins, which are open about 09:00 to 16:30. Mexican citizens enter free on Sundays. Flash, food, smoking and pets are not allowed, and professional cameras cost extra. A trail runs through the jungle behind the museum. See INAH’s Museo Maya page and San Miguelito page .
El Rey
El Rey reopened in July 2025 with a renovated entrance, restrooms and parking. It is open daily from 08:00 to 17:00 and costs 75 MXN. It lies around Km 17 to 18, and iguanas are commonly seen among the ruins. It is a short stop and pairs well with the museum.
El Meco
El Meco is on the Puerto Juárez to Punta Sam highway at Km 2+700, north of downtown. It opens daily from 08:00 to 16:30, with last entry at 16:00. Entry is 145 MXN for foreign visitors and 80 MXN for Mexicans. The main pyramid, El Castillo, is about 12 to 17 m tall. See INAH’s El Meco page .
Torre Escénica
The rotating observation tower stands at Km 4.5, beside the Embarcadero pier. It was listed as open in late 2025. Check hours and prices before you go.
El Centro
Parque de las Palapas is the downtown plaza, free to enter, and in the evening food stalls set up around it. Try a marquesita, the local snack. Mercado 28 is the downtown market. Downtown, be cautious after dark and use registered taxis.
Playa Delfines viewpoint
The Cancún sign at Delfines is a popular spot for sunrise and sunset photos. Treat it as a viewpoint only: the surf is open Caribbean with rip currents, and red flags are common, so nobody swims here.
The Hotel Zone road
Boulevard Kukulcán is about 22 km long and shaped like a 7. Km markers help: Punta Cancún and Coco Bongo are about Km 9 to 9.5, La Isla and the Interactive Aquarium are at Km 12.5, the Museo Maya is at Km 16.5 and Punta Nizuc is around Km 21 to 22. R-1 and R-2 buses cost about 12 MXN to the Hotel Zone, cash only. They do not run to the airport.
