Multi-Day Trips from Cancún

Cancún works well as the start of a longer loop. These routes run from three days to five and use the ferry, the Tren Maya and the road. Fares and fees are 2026 figures, and several have changed during the year.

Three days: Cancún, Isla Mujeres and Chichén Itzá

Day one covers the Cancún sights: the MUSA sculpture gallery by boat, or the Museo Maya de Cancún and the San Miguelito ruins at Km 16.5. Day two is a ferry day on Isla Mujeres. Ultramar’s foreign adult round trip is about 580 MXN, with the crossing about 20 to 30 minutes from Puerto Juárez. Day three is Chichén Itzá, which is about 200 km away. Leave early: the site is open 08:00 to 16:00 and one ticket costs 697 MXN for a foreign adult. Confirm it is open before the drive.

Four to five days: the Tren Maya route

The Cancún Airport station is on Highway 180, with a free connecting bus. Foreign fares reported for 2026 are about 620 MXN to Chichén Itzá, taking about 2 hours 15 minutes, and about 977 MXN to Mérida Teya. A typical run goes from Cancún to Chichén Itzá, overnight in Valladolid, then Cobá and Tulum. Station-to-ruins transfers are extra, so price them in. Tulum and Cobá have a changed fee structure: budget roughly 200 to 300 MXN for Tulum and about 209 MXN for Cobá. The Tren Maya fare report lists the Chichén Itzá fare.

Holbox overnight

Isla Holbox is reached by the Chiquilá ferry, and the long part is the drive to Chiquilá. It is best done as an overnight. Whale-shark trips operate from 15 May to 17 September, with licensed boats and no touching.

Isla Mujeres overnight

Staying on Isla Mujeres puts Punta Sur and Playa Norte within easy reach without the day-trip crowds. A golf cart rental costs about 1,300 MXN for a daytime hire. Playa Norte is usually among the cleanest beaches, though sargassum can arrive in any month.

Planning notes

  • No road route links Cancún to the Bahamas or Central America, so keep onward plans to the Yucatán Peninsula.
  • Pay Visitax once on entry to Quintana Roo, about 285 MXN (about US$15), at visitax.gob.mx .
  • Cozumel needs a first leg to Playa del Carmen, about an hour south, where the Ultramar ferry takes 40 to 45 minutes.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season lasts from 1 June to 30 November.
  • Use registered taxis, and agree the fare before you start.
