Day Trips from Almaty
Almaty works well as a base for long days in the Tian Shan and the steppe to the east and north-west. Distances are modest on a map, but mountain roads and checkpoints slow everything down, so plan one main stop per day. Fees are in tenge (KZT), at roughly 470 to 490 to the US dollar in 2026, and gates often prefer cash.
Charyn Canyon
Charyn lies about 200 km east of the city, 3 to 3.5 hours each way, so a tour makes it a 10 to 12 hour day. The last stretch is a dirt road that is passable in dry weather, and fuel is scarce after Shelek, so fill up before you leave town. Entry is 865 KZT on foot, 2,595 KZT for a car and 8,650 KZT for a minibus of up to 16 seats. The Valley of Castles trail runs 2 to 3 km and takes 40 to 50 minutes one way. An eco-taxi up from the canyon floor costs about 800 KZT per person. Camping is allowed only in designated places, for a separate fee.
Turgen Gorge
Turgen is about 70 km east of Almaty. The visitor centre at the Turgensai eco-post charged 506 KZT per person in a 2025 listing. It opens from 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and until 20:00 at weekends. Waterfalls and trout farms lie close by, which makes this the easiest nature day for anyone short of time.
Big Almaty Lake
This is a walk or a licensed tour, not a drive. The road to the lake has been closed to private cars since 2020, and since spring 2026 motorbikes, e-scooters and e-bikes are barred too. Expect a long climb of roughly 7 to 15 km each way depending on the drop-off point, with over 1,000 m of ascent on the main road, so allow most of the day. A pedestrian eco fee of about 650 KZT is paid at the checkpoint or through banking apps. Carry your original passport, expect a checkpoint, and confirm the rules with the park or a licensed operator. Swimming, fishing, boating, fires and camping are banned because the lake supplies drinking water. From November to April the road is snowbound and prone to avalanches. Bus 28 reaches the Kokshoky stop in the Big Almaty Gorge, which is in the gorge and not at the lake.
Tamgaly petroglyphs
Tamgaly is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2004, about 170 km north-west of Almaty. The drive takes roughly 3 hours, so treat it as a full day and ask your operator about entry and opening hours. Do not confuse it with Tamgaly-Tas, the separate Buddhist carvings on the Ili River.
Medeu and Shymbulak
Medeu and Shymbulak are two places linked by gondola. Bus 12 from the Almaty-2 railway station reaches the Medeu dam and the lower gondola station in 35 to 50 minutes for 120 KZT, cashless. Adults pay 12,000 KZT round trip on the Shymbulak Ticket. The Medeu ice rink is closed for reconstruction, so go for the dam, the views and the lifts.
Trips that need longer
Kolsai and Kaindy lakes are about 300 km away, 4 to 6 hours each way, so they suit an overnight stay rather than a day. Altyn-Emel National Park needs at least two days. Astana is roughly 1,200 km north and is not a day trip from Almaty.
Mountain safety matters on every outing here: stay on marked trails, expect mudflow and rockfall after rain and thaw, and note that mountain rescue is reached on 109 or 112.
