Tsaghkadzor Walks: Town, Kecharis and Ridge
Tsaghkadzor is small enough to explore on foot, but it is a walk-it-yourself town. The routes below link sights rather than follow waymarked trails, and no guided city walk is listed. Allow an easy hour or two for each walk, and more for stops. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov for current Armenia advice before you go.
The town centre walk
Start on Tsaghkunyats Street, where a bronze statue of the clown Leonid Yengibarov stands in the town centre. Walk to Orbeli Brothers Street, the main street for sights and meals:
- No. 8: the restaurants Yasaman and Karas
- No. 12: the Orbeli Brothers House-Museum, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00
- No. 18: Pur restaurant
- No. 20: Grace Kecharis SPA Hotel
The museum charges 1,400 AMD for adults, 700 AMD for ages 12 to 18 and nothing for under 12s (official site ). Kecharis lies uphill from here, in the northern part of town.
Kecharis and Surp Harutyun
Kecharis Monastery sits on a wooded hillside in the north of town and is free to enter. It has no published opening hours, so go in daylight. The complex holds four churches and chapels from the 11th to the 13th century. Cover shoulders and knees and keep voices low.
From the main group, a short walk west through the trees leads to the small Surp Harutyun church, dated 1220, which stands alone in a forest glade. Wear shoes with grip, since snow and ice slow the walk in winter and daylight is short.
The city park
The park on the hill near Kecharis has paths and cafes and is known as the Action Park. It also holds a zipline, a VR simulator and trampolines. Treat it as a relaxed place for a coffee after the monastery, not a hiking destination.
A ridge walk in summer
An operator suggests a half-day loop on the ridges and summit area above the top chairlift station, with no named trail, length or waymarking published. The lifts reach 2,819 m, and Mount Teghenis peaks at about 2,851 m. The lifts run daily from 10:00 to 17:30, and about 3,000 AMD per ride is a recent summer figure at ropeway.am , so confirm at the ticket office.
Take a warm windproof layer, water and a map or offline route, and turn back if clouds build, since thunderstorms are possible in the mountains.
Beyond town
Tour operators sell a hiking day that combines Kecharis and Lastiver, with a campground fee of about 1,000 AMD. Lake Tsaghkunyats, a small alpine lake at about 2,420 to 2,450 m, is reached by a loop hike from Aghveran on the far side of the range, not from Tsaghkadzor, and it is for walking only, with no boating or swimming.
