Areni Day Trips: Noravank, Yeghegis, Jermuk
Distances at a Glance
Areni sits on the M2 highway in Vayots Dzor, about 108 to 115 km from Yerevan, which is 1.5 to 2 hours by car. Yeghegnadzor is the next town on after Areni. All times below are approximate road figures, so allow extra for photo stops and slow mountain roads.
From Yerevan: Khor Virap, Areni-1 and Noravank
This is the classic full day. Khor Virap is about 45 km from Yerevan, Areni is about 110 to 115 km and Noravank is about 122 km, so the far end is roughly 2 hours each way. Khor Virap to Areni is about 73 km, around an hour. Khor Virap stands beside the closed Turkey border fence. Do not add a stop at Yeraskh village. A sensible order is Khor Virap, the Areni-1 cave and a tasting, then Noravank in the afternoon.
Noravank Canyon
Noravank is about 10 km up the Amaghu (Gnishik) gorge from Areni. The monastery was founded in 1105, and the main church dates to the early 13th century. Entry is free according to guides, and daytime visits are the rule. A taxi or driver from Areni or Yeghegnadzor is needed because no public transport reaches the site.
Yeghegnadzor, Old Bridge and Getnatoun
Yeghegnadzor is the provincial town just beyond Areni. Old Bridge Winery is at Yerevanyan Highway 1, and its winery and restaurant are open daily from 12:00 to 21:30. Getnatoun, founded in 1999, is also in town. The Arpa Protected Landscape visitor centre is here too.
Jermuk
Jermuk is a spa town known for its mineral springs, about 62 km from Areni and roughly an hour by car via Yeghegnadzor. A bus runs from Yeghegnadzor to Jermuk about four times a day and takes about an hour. It works as a half day or a full day alongside a winery stop.
The Yeghegis Valley
The valley holds Smbataberd fortress, Tsakhats Kar monastery and Zorats church. The hiking loop from Yeghegis village is about 10 to 12 km, takes 5 to 6 hours and climbs about 600 m. Tsakhats Kar has three churches and lies about 6 km north of Yeghegis. Allow more than an hour each way from Areni, and treat these as a separate day from Noravank.
Spitakavor Monastery
Spitakavor dates to 1321 and stands on the slopes of Teksar mountain, about 7 km north of Vernashen near Yeghegnadzor. The terrain is rough and visitors come on foot or by all-terrain vehicle. It is the resting place of Garegin Nzhdeh, and people gather there each year on 17 June, so keep a quiet, respectful tone. Proshaberd fortress is about 6 km away.
Getting There Without a Car
No bus serves Areni as a destination. Marshrutkas from Yerevan to Yeghegnadzor, Vayk or Goris pass the village and can drop you on the main road. The fare is about 1,200 to 2,000 AMD and the trip takes about 2 hours. The departure point changes between sources, so confirm it on the day. One private-tour listing shows day trips from about US$90.
