Areni Multi-Day Trips and Wine Country Bases
Travel advice as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US lists Armenia at Level 2 and tells travellers not to go to the Azerbaijan border region. Areni, Noravank and the sights below lie outside those areas. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go, and stay on main roads in Syunik and Gegharkunik.
Choosing a Base
Areni is about 110 to 115 km from Yerevan on the M2 highway, so it works either as a day trip or as an overnight stop. The longer plans below suit travellers who want to taste wine without driving back after dark.
Two Nights in Areni or Yeghegnadzor
A two-night stay covers the area comfortably. Spend the first day on the Areni-1 cave and a winery or two, the second on Noravank and the Arpa Protected Landscape, and the last morning on the Yeghegis valley, Spitakavor or Jermuk. Booking sites list Areni Wine Art, Areni House B&B, Areni Wine Cellar guesthouse and Siran Guest House in the village. In Yeghegnadzor, the Old Bridge B&B is at Levonyan 16, a separate building from the winery. Confirm availability and prices before you plan around any of them.
Yerevan Base for Four or Five Nights
Many visitors stay in Yerevan and make day trips. Garni and Geghard fill one day, and Khor Virap, Areni and Noravank fill another. Areni is about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so leave early.
Two-Day Push South
On day 1, drive from Yerevan to Khor Virap, Areni-1 and Noravank, then continue over the Vorotan Pass at 2,344 m to Zorats Karer, also called Karahunj, near Sisian. Sleep in Goris. On day 2, visit Tatev and the Wings of Tatev at Halidzor, which is about 131 km from Areni by road and takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Return along the same M2 road. Stay on main roads throughout. Going back over the Selim (Vardenyats) pass and past Sevan is not a realistic extra day after Tatev, and the pass closes in winter snow.
Wine and Monasteries Loop
A longer loop runs Yerevan, Khor Virap, Areni, Noravank, Yeghegis and Jermuk, then back along the M2. Drive times are approximate, and the Yeghegis valley and Jermuk each take a half day or more.
Festival Weekend
The Areni Wine Festival is traditionally held on the first Saturday of October. The 2026 edition took place on 3 October and is over, and the 2027 date has not been announced, so check armenia.travel. Organisers expected about 30,000 visitors in 2026, so book Areni and Yeghegnadzor lodging months ahead.
Getting Around
No direct bus serves Areni as a destination, but marshrutkas to Yeghegnadzor, Vayk and Goris pass the village. No public transport reaches Noravank, so hire a driver or tour transport there.
