Areni Walks: Canyon Trails and Village Lanes
What Walking Looks Like Here
Areni is a small village rather than a walking-tour town. There are no city-style walking routes, and the best walking is on the trails in the canyon above it and in the Yeghegis valley. The village itself can be strolled slowly: the lanes, the bridge over the Arpa river, the wineries and the church on the hill. Most visitors combine a short village stroll with one trail.
Guided Heritage Walk
A private listing offers a Heritage of Areni walking tour with wine tasting that lasts about 3 hours. It links the ArpaParnas Wine and Rest Valley, Areni Wine Factory and Stepanyans’ Gastro Yard. Prices vary widely between resellers, so compare the operator’s own figure. The village is small enough to wander without a set route.
Areni Church
The Holy Mother of God church is about 0.5 km north of the village on a hill above the Arpa. It was completed in 1321 and has a west-portal relief of the Virgin and Child. Entry is free.
Amaghu to Noravank
A 2.8 km trail links the ruined village of Amaghu to Noravank and is run with the Arpa Environmental Foundation. It gives an on-foot approach to the monastery through the gorge.
Bezoar Trail and Chukar Trail
Both trails lie in the Arpa Protected Landscape. The Bezoar Trail is 3.1 km out and back, and the Chukar Trail is 5.8 km out and back from Noravank. A 2025 guide quoted a hiking fee of 10,000 AMD per group of 2 to 10 and asked for 72 hours’ notice, so confirm the fee with the foundation, whose visitor centre is in Yeghegnadzor. Bezoar goats are seen with a ranger.
Gnishik Canyon Trail
Guides give the canyon trail as 8 to 13 km, depending on the section. The seasons are late April to mid June and mid October to December. Confirm conditions locally before you set out.
Smbataberd, Tsakhats Kar and Zorats
The loop from Yeghegis village covers about 10 to 12 km, takes 5 to 6 hours and climbs about 600 m. It passes Smbataberd fortress, Tsakhats Kar monastery, which has three churches and lies about 6 km north of Yeghegis, and Zorats church. Allow more than an hour each way from Areni, and start early.
Practical Tips
Wear sturdy shoes, carry water on every trail and tell someone your route. Spring and autumn are the guided seasons in the canyon. Check gov.uk and travel.state.gov for current Armenia advice before you go.
