Areni Sights: Noravank, Cave and Church
Noravank Monastery
Noravank stands at about 1,500 m in the red-walled Amaghu (Gnishik) gorge, about 10 km from Areni and 3 km north-east of the abandoned village of Amaghu. The monastery was founded in 1105 by Bishop Hovhannes according to the history of Stepanos Orbelian. The churches are free-standing stone buildings, not cave churches.
The main church, Surb Karapet, also called Surb Stepanos Nakhavka, dates to the early 13th century. Its window tympanum shows God the Father in human form blessing a crucifix. Surb Astvatsatsin, also called Burtelashen, was completed in 1339 for Prince Burtel Orbelian and is attributed to Momik as his last work. A narrow stair on its west facade has no handrail, so take care. Guides describe entry as free, with parking about 100 AMD and a small museum about 500 AMD. Visit in the daytime. A driver or taxi is needed, since no public transport reaches the site.
Areni-1 Cave
The cave lies about 2 km from the village beside the main highway. Archaeologists from the Armenian Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, with partners from UCC and UCLA, excavated it between 2007 and 2014. They found a winemaking installation of a vat, a press and jars dated to about 4100 BC, around 6,100 years ago, and a one-piece leather shoe of about 3600 to 3500 BC. Both belong to the Chalcolithic period. The shoe is in the History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan. Entry is about 1,000 AMD, and daytime hours differ between listings, so confirm on the day. A guide helps, because the cave is a modest dry space and the finds are elsewhere. A cave museum is planned around the end of 2026; check before you go.
Areni Church
The Holy Mother of God church is about 0.5 km north of the village on a hill above the Arpa river. An inscription at the west door dates its completion to 1321, and it was commissioned by Hovhannes Orbelian, Archbishop of Syunik, and designed by Momik. Its west portal carries a famous relief of the Virgin and Child. Damage from the 1840 earthquake was repaired in 1967 to 1972, and the dome was rebuilt in 1998. Entry is free. It does not serve as an active parish church, so ask locally about services.
The Canyon and Its Goats
The canyon sits inside the Arpa Protected Landscape, where bezoar goats live on the cliffs. Viewing is with a ranger rather than from a roadside stop. Bearded vultures and rare butterflies are also recorded here. Early morning and evening are the best times, and the Arpa Environmental Foundation visitor centre in Yeghegnadzor handles bookings.
Zorats Church, Yeghegis
Surb Zorats, also called St Stepanos, in the Yeghegis valley dates to the 14th century, and secondary sources give about 1303. Its altar is said to be raised to the height of a rider on horseback. It lies beyond Areni, so allow more than an hour each way.
Smbataberd Fortress
Smbataberd stands on a hilltop at about 2,000 m. Its origins may go back to the 5th century, and it was fortified between the 9th and 13th centuries. It has been a protected reserve since June 2018 and is open through the north gate.
