Areni for Couples: Vineyard Evenings
A Quiet Wine Village
Areni is a small village, and its romance is in the vineyards and the red canyon walls rather than in resorts or spas. A couple’s visit is built from tastings, a dinner, a night at a guesthouse and a walk at Noravank. Plan a night or two, and book a driver or tour transport if you plan to taste.
Momik WineCube
The Momik WineCube is a hilltop tasting among the vines, hosted by Nver and Narine Nazaryan. Guides call it best in the evening. Opening times of about 11:00 to 19:00 are quoted, and the winery asks for 24 hours’ notice. Ask for the tasting price when you book.
Dinner at Old Bridge
Old Bridge Winery is at Yerevanyan Highway 1 in Yeghegnadzor, not in Areni village. Its winery and restaurant are open daily from 12:00 to 21:30. The Old Bridge B&B is a separate building at Levonyan 16 in the town, so a dinner and a night can be arranged together but not in the same place.
Trinity Canyon
Trinity Canyon Vineyards is in Aghavnadzor, between Areni and Yeghegnadzor. The winemaker-led tasting takes about 1.5 hours and is offered with cheese and bread. Booking sites show roughly US$32 to 34 per person. Reserve a day ahead.
Hin Areni VIP Tasting
Hin Areni’s VIP package is 12,000 AMD and includes a winery and cellar tour, a Wine Bank tour, three classic and three Reserve wines and a cheese platter. Confirm whether the price is per person, and reserve by phone or at tours@hinareniwine.am .
Where to Stay
Areni Wine Art is a guesthouse and small winery listed on booking sites in Areni. A lunch with tasting at a local house appears on tour listings. Areni House B&B, Areni Wine Cellar guesthouse and Siran Guest House are also listed in the village, and prices change with the season, so confirm before you book.
Noravank in Late Light
Noravank sits about 10 km up the canyon from Areni, and the colour of the cliffs is the reason to go. The monastery was founded in 1105. The church of Surb Astvatsatsin, completed in 1339, is attributed to Momik. A 2.8 km trail links the ruined village of Amaghu to Noravank and is a pleasant walk for two. Go in the afternoon and carry water, and do not climb the narrow stair on the west facade, which has no handrail.
A Short Archaeological Stop
The Areni-1 cave is about 2 km from the village. It holds the remains of a winemaking installation of about 4100 BC, and a short visit pairs naturally with the Hin Areni tasting room beside it. The cave is modest and dusty, so keep the stop brief.
