Tsaghkadzor Day Trips to Sevan and Dilijan
Travel advice as of 31 October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, and the US lists Armenia at Level 2. Tsaghkadzor, Lake Sevan and Dilijan lie outside those areas. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go, avoid night driving on mountain roads and expect poor road surfaces in winter.
Tsaghkadzor sits between Lake Sevan and Yerevan, so the useful day trips run in three directions: east to the lake, north-east to Dilijan, and south to the capital. Distances below come from road listings on Rome2rio, and a car or taxi is the simplest way to link them.
Lake Sevan and Sevanavank
Lake Sevan is 22 to 25 km from town, a drive of about 20 to 40 minutes (Rome2rio lists 22 km and 18 minutes). The lake lies at about 1,900 m, and Sevanavank, the monastery on the Sevan peninsula, is free to visit. Stay on the usual peninsula road and do not head along the eastern shore beyond Vardenis.
Swimming water is cool to cold, roughly 15 to 24 C in July and August depending on the spot, and winds can rise suddenly. Do not count on lifeguard cover. Tsaghkadzor itself is not on the lake.
Dilijan and Haghartsin
Dilijan is about 60 km by road via Sevan: 25 km to the lake plus 37 km on to Dilijan, which takes 35 minutes on the second leg. Allow 1 to 1.25 hours each way. The town sits in forested hills. About 13 km beyond Dilijan is Haghartsin Monastery, built between the 10th and 13th centuries, and Goshavank is nearby. Keep to the main road through Dilijan and do not continue onto the Ijevan to Noyemberyan road.
Yerevan
Yerevan is about 54 km away, 50 minutes to 1 hour by car. A shared minibus or bus link exists from the capital, but sources disagree on the station and times, so confirm both locally. One local guide describes minibuses from the Yeritasardakan (Youth) metro station to Hrazdan, then a local minibus to Tsaghkadzor for about 100 AMD. A taxi is reported at about 8,000 to 10,000 AMD one way in an app such as GG or Yandex Go.
Garni and Geghard
Geghard Monastery is about 76 km from Tsaghkadzor, around 1 hour 10 minutes by road. Together with Garni it makes a long day, and it fits more easily as a trip from Yerevan than as a return run from the resort.
Tatev is not a day trip
Tatev Monastery is about 263 km away, roughly 3 hours 45 minutes each way. Plan it from Yerevan or as an overnight in Syunik instead.
Planning the day
- Start early, and fit any chairlift ride between 10:00 and 17:30, the ropeway’s daily hours.
- Mountain roads can be icy from November to February.
- Pair Sevan with Dilijan only if you have a full day, and leave Dilijan before dark.
