Tsaghkadzor Ski Weekends and Summer Breaks
Travel advice as of 31 October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan, and the US lists Armenia at Level 2. Tsaghkadzor, Lake Sevan and Dilijan lie outside those areas. Read gov.uk and travel.state.gov before you go, avoid night driving on mountain roads and expect poor road surfaces in winter.
Tsaghkadzor is about 55 km from Yerevan, so a stay of two or three nights is enough to cover the town, the ropeway and one trip out. These plans are sketches built on opening hours and distances, not bookable packages.
A ski weekend, December to March
- Day 1. Arrive from Yerevan, a drive of 50 minutes to 1 hour. Walk up to Kecharis Monastery, visit the Orbeli Brothers House-Museum (open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 17:00) and photograph the Leonid Yengibarov statue on Tsaghkunyats Street.
- Day 2. Ride the lifts from 10:00 to 17:30. A one-day card is 12,000 AMD on the operator’s winter list at ropeway.am , and three-day cards are 30,000 AMD. The season usually runs from mid-December to March, and the operator announces the opening date each year.
- Day 3. Drive to Lake Sevan, about 22 to 25 km away, for a winter walk at Sevanavank, or head straight back to Yerevan.
A summer mountain break
- Spend one day on the chairlifts to the top at 2,819 m and the zipline in the Action Park, listed at about 10,000 AMD.
- Spend a second day on foot between the town and Kecharis, with a short extra walk to the small Surp Harutyun church in the forest.
- Add a Lake Sevan day if you have a third. Water at the lake is cool to cold, so do not plan around swimming.
The Kotayk and Gegharkunik loop
A longer drive links Tsaghkadzor, Lake Sevan and Dilijan, then returns to Yerevan or follows the Sevan road back. Dilijan is about 60 km from Tsaghkadzor via Sevan, 1 to 1.25 hours. Stay on main roads, leave Dilijan before dark and do not use the Ijevan to Noyemberyan road. The loop suits two nights: one in Tsaghkadzor and one in Dilijan.
An autumn chess weekend
The Tsaghkadzor Open is an international chess tournament held each autumn. It is an event for players, not a spectator package, so check the dates with the organisers before you plan around it.
