Areni With Kids: Short Stops and Workshops
What to Expect
Areni is a wine village, and most of its visitor offer is tastings that are for adults. Areni has no petting zoo or children’s attraction. Families get the most from short, varied stops: a cave, a church, a workshop and some time outdoors in the canyon. Plan for a quiet visit of a day or two, and take water and sun protection from May to October.
Climbing for Beginners
The Areni sector of the Noravank canyon has eight easy routes, graded 5a to 6a+, which suit beginners and children. Climbing in the canyon is described as dangerous and not always permitted, so book a qualified guide rather than going alone. Up The Rocks, based in Yerevan, takes guide and instructor requests by email. Bring helmets and harnesses with you, since rental is not something to count on.
The Areni-1 Cave
The cave is about 2 km from the village, beside the main highway, and a visit is short. Explain to children beforehand that the finds are in museums: the 5,500-year-old leather shoe is on display at the History Museum of Armenia in Yerevan, and the cave itself is dry, dusty and modest. Entry is about 1,000 AMD per person. Hours differ between listings, so go in the daytime and confirm on the day. A cave museum is planned around the end of 2026; check before you go.
Areni Church and Village Lanes
The Holy Mother of God church stands about 0.5 km north of the village on a hill above the Arpa river. An inscription at the west door gives 1321 as the year it was completed, and the west portal carries a relief of the Virgin and Child. The church was damaged in the 1840 earthquake and restored between 1967 and 1972. Entry is free, and the visit takes little time. The lanes of the village are short and quiet.
Clay and Bread Workshops
Arhestanots Studio in Areni runs clay masterclasses and is listed as family-friendly. Reserve 24 hours ahead and ask whether it is running this season. Areni Wine Factory offers a lavash-baking workshop by reservation, which gives children a hands-on stop while adults sit out the wine.
Goat Watching
The bezoar goats of the Arpa Protected Landscape are seen with a ranger, and guides name early morning and evening as the best times. Book ahead through the Arpa Environmental Foundation, whose visitor centre is in Yeghegnadzor.
Noravank
Noravank is a good family stop in daylight, about 10 km up the gorge from Areni. The narrow stair on the west facade of the Burtelashen church has no handrail and is steep, so keep children off it and hold small hands near the edge.
