Family Days Out in Klaipeda
Klaipėda suits families who like boats, animals and short outings. Most of the best stops are outdoors or a ferry ride away, so plan around weather. Prices are in euros and are the 2026 figures.
Start with a ferry ride
The ferry to Smiltynė costs EUR 1.70 for a round-trip passenger ticket, and bicycles travel free with a passenger ticket. Foot passengers board at the Old Ferry Terminal, E. Galvanausko bul. 1. The crossing takes about 5 to 7 minutes, and children usually enjoy watching cargo ships and tugs pass close by. The ticket also covers the return trip. Fares are on the ferry price list .
Lithuanian Sea Museum and Aquarium
The museum is at Smiltynės g. 3 on the Curonian Spit, about 1.6 km from the Old Ferry. Families can walk or cycle, or take the paid mini train that runs on the ferry schedule. The aquarium, the grey seals and harbour seals in the rampart enclosures, and the Baltic exhibitions fill a good half day. The museum also runs a Baltic Sea animal rehabilitation centre, with tours booked in advance by email. Pets are not allowed in the halls.
Ticket prices are EUR 10 for adults from October to April and EUR 14 from May to September. Schoolchildren and students pay EUR 5 or EUR 7, and pre-school children enter free. Entry is free for everyone on the last Sunday of each month. The museum also stages dolphin and sea lion presentations, for which adults pay EUR 12 in winter and EUR 18 in summer. Winter opening is Friday to Sunday only, so see the opening hours page before you cross.
Museum ship Sūduvis
Sūduvis is a former German-built minehunter moored on the Danė River near the Castle Bridge. It costs EUR 6 for adults and EUR 3 reduced. The ladders are narrow and the steps are steep, so it is not suited to small children or pushchairs. Older children who can climb safely will get more from it.
Dino Park
Dino Park is at Pušyno g. 9 in Radailiai, about 7 km east of the city centre. It has animatronic dinosaurs set among trees, and an Upside-Down House that costs a few euros extra. The season runs from about 1 April to 31 October, so it is closed in winter. A ticket costs about EUR 10, and opening hours vary, so check the park’s own listing before you go.
Hill of Witches
The Hill of Witches in Juodkrantė, on the Curonian Spit, is a forest walk lined with about 80 wooden sculptures of witches, devils and folk figures. It is free and open at all hours. To get there by public transport, take the Smiltynė to Nida bus, which costs EUR 8.00 per person.
Old Town sculpture hunt
The Old Town has small bronze sculptures tucked into streets and corners. Walking the lanes to spot them is a free activity that suits a rainy hour or a stroll between meals.
Beaches and the Baltic
Smiltynė and Melnragė are sandy Baltic beaches. The sea is cold, with averages of about 13 degrees C in June and about 16 degrees C in July. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty, follow the flags, and stay out in storms. Keep children away from the harbour breakwater and the strait.
