Family Activities in Kuusalu Parish
Family outings in Kuusalu parish are outdoor walks and short visits, spread over 40 to 55 km of coast east of Tallinn in Harju County. The area suits families who like forest, boardwalks and old buildings, and it works best with a car, a picnic and a flexible plan. Most children will manage the shorter routes below without trouble.
Viru bog boardwalk
This is the easiest family walk. The trail is 3.5 km one way, about 5.5 km as a loop, and the boardwalk covers 3 km. It is free. The observation tower stands about 1.3 km from the car park, which makes a good target for younger walkers. Some practical points from RMK, the state forest manager:
- Stay on the boardwalk at all times.
- Cycling on the boardwalk is not allowed, so leave bikes and scooters in the car.
- The top floor of the tower holds 25 people, and climbing is closed in thunderstorms.
- Only the first platform of the tower is wheelchair-accessible, and the path to the tower is passable by wheelchair only with an assistant.
- The car park has space for 91 cars and 5 buses, and only portable toilets were on site during renovation.
- The bog is highly flammable, so no fires or smoking.
Boots are a sensible choice for children. See the RMK trail page for current notices.
Tsitre tree trail and beach
Tsitre is a former seaside summer estate on Kolga Bay. Its tree trail is only 0.5 km, so it suits toddlers and tired legs. There is also a beach and an observation tower over the bay. Bring your own food and water.
Hara submarine base
Hara is a derelict Soviet-era harbour and submarine base, not an active naval site. Adults pay EUR 10, students and seniors EUR 7, a family ticket is EUR 22, and preschool children are free. Children under 13 must be accompanied by an adult. The site carries real hazards: falling rocks, no climbing on the pier rocks or in abandoned buildings, no swimming or jumping into the water, and no vehicles or bikes on the pier. Dogs must be on a leash. Outside the summer season the base opens by reservation, so write to info@harasadam.ee first. The Hara base site lists the rules.
Viinistu Art Museum
The museum in Viinistu village holds Jaan Manitski’s private collection. Adults pay EUR 6 and concessions EUR 3. Opening days change with the season, so check viinistu.ee before you travel. It suits a calm stop for older children, followed by a walk around the harbour.
Majakivi boulder
Majakivi, beside Hara village, is about 7 m high and can be climbed by ladder. Children should go up only with an adult close by.
Planning notes
- Pack layers and rain gear in every season.
- Plan the day around two stops, not four.
- Buses on the E20 stop at Loksa tee, about 1.3 km from the bog trailhead; check peatus.ee .
- For a guided option, compare Lahemaa outings on GetYourGuide .
