Day Trips From Kazungula
Four day trips work from Kazungula: Chobe National Park in Botswana, Livingstone and the Falls in Zambia, Victoria Falls town in Zimbabwe and Impalila Island in Namibia. Each one crosses at least one border, so the passport check matters as much as the distance. Waits at the border vary, which means a long day needs a relaxed start.
Chobe National Park, Botswana
Chobe is the obvious first choice. Kasane is about 8 km west of the Kazungula Bridge, and Sedudu Gate is the park entrance for river-front game drives. From the Zambian side you need to cross the border first. The KAZA UniVisa covers a day trip into Botswana through Kazungula, but a plain Zambian visa does not. The UniVisa costs US$50 and is for nationalities that need a Zambian visa, and UK passport holders need no visa for 90 days in either country. Plan a morning cruise of about three hours or an afternoon game drive of about 3:00 to 6:00 pm.
Livingstone and the Falls, Zambia
Livingstone is about 70 km from Kazungula on the M10, and the Falls are a little beyond it, roughly 80 km from the bridge. Allow about one to one and a quarter hours by road each way. It is a workable long day, not a short drive. In Livingstone, the Livingstone Museum, established in 1934, is the oldest and largest museum in Zambia, so confirm its opening hours first. Mukuni Village, about 7 km from the Falls, is a working Leya village with a curio market.
Victoria Falls town, Zimbabwe
From Kasane, tour operators describe 80 to 90 km to Victoria Falls via the Botswana to Zimbabwe border, taking about one and a half to two hours door to door including the crossing. The KAZA UniVisa is valid between Zambia and Zimbabwe, which makes the Zambia and Zimbabwe sides easy to combine on one pass.
Impalila Island, Namibia
The island is about 15 minutes by speedboat from Kasane, with Namibian immigration cleared at Kasane. It suits birders, with Pel’s fishing owl, African finfoot and white-backed night heron on operator itineraries. A boat transfer is the practical way to go.
Trips that are too far
The Okavango Delta, Moremi and Maun are more than 600 km away and are not day trips. Plan them as an overnight stay at least.
Before you set off
Carry your passport, and check that it is valid for six months beyond arrival. Zambia asks for two blank pages and Botswana for three. The Kazungula Bridge between Zambia and Botswana carries heavy truck traffic, so treat it as a crossing and not a place to stop. A per-vehicle toll applies if you drive, so check current rates with the bridge authority. Take normal precautions, keep to wildlife rules, and check current entry rules for health screening before you travel.
