Day Trips to Lahij From Baku and Shamakhi
Travel advice, October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Azerbaijan’s border with Armenia and against all but essential travel to the south-western districts hit by the 2020 and 2023 conflicts, where landmines and unexploded ordnance remain. The US lists Azerbaijan at Level 3, reconsider travel. Lahij and the places below are outside those areas. See gov.uk and travel.state.gov for the latest.
Lahij is itself the day trip. It lies about 180 km from Baku, which is 3 to 4 hours each way by car, and about 55 km from Shamakhi via Ismayilli. From a guesthouse in the village you can add a few short outings in Ismayilli district, but there is little else within easy range.
Getting to Lahij for the day
By car, the last 20 to 22 km from Ismayilli takes about 40 minutes on a sealed but potholed, narrow, steep gorge road. By bus, a morning minibus from the Baku International Bus Terminal to Ismayilli takes about 4 hours and costs about 8 AZN, so check Biletim. From Ismayilli a local bus or van to Lahij costs about 5 AZN, and a taxi about 60 AZN. The last van back from Ismayilli to Baku has been reported at 2:15 pm. A day visitor on public transport should plan the return before anything else.
The road is among the most landslide-prone in Azerbaijan. Reports from May and June 2026 describe rockfall and slide damage on parts of it. Ask your guesthouse or the traffic police about conditions, and expect snow and ice to close it in winter. Cars park in the riverside lot at the village entrance, and the walk in takes under 10 minutes.
Zarnava suspension footbridge
The 74 m footbridge crosses the Girdiman stream beside the Ismayilli to Lahij road. You leave the sealed road and follow a rocky dirt road down to the village of Zarnava. A small fee may apply. The bridge sways and is exposed, so keep children by the hand. It is also the start of the 7 km Zarnava to Mushkamir hike, which takes about 3 hours.
Basgal
Basgal is the kelaghayi silk scarf village, on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage list since 2014. It has the Basgal Silk Center with a small museum, a tower and a hamam. It is roughly 40 to 45 km from Lahij via Ismayilli and about 155 km from Baku. Opening hours and fees for the Silk Center are not published, so ask locally.
Ivanovka
Ivanovka is a Molokan Russian village founded in the 1830s. It has a Molokan Cultural Centre, honey, cheese and rye bread. The farm there was formerly the last kolkhoz in the Caucasus and is now Ivanovka Agropark.
Chabiant Winery
Chabiant sits in Hajihatamli, in the Ismayilli lowlands. The Azerbaijan Tourism Board lists tastings and a cellar tour of about 90 minutes, and there is a guesthouse on site. Check opening hours first. The winery is in Hajihatamli, not in Lahij, and the village itself has no vineyards.
Garanohur Lake hike
A marked 5.5 km trail leads from Talistan village in Shahdag National Park to Garanohur Lake in about 3 hours.
Shamakhi
Shamakhi, with the Diri Baba Mausoleum and the Juma Mosque, makes a day of its own. Combine it with Lahij by car rather than on foot.
Too far for a day trip
Gobustan, Naftalan, Sheki, Kish and Lake Goygol are all more than 2.5 hours away. Gabala is a long drive via Ismayilli and works best as its own day.
