Ghardaïa Day Trips: Metlili and Zelfana
Day trips from Ghardaïa are limited. The town sits in a hyper-arid corner of the northern Sahara, and the most worthwhile outings are short oasis and spa excursions rather than a long list of attractions. Most of the best sightseeing, the five ksour of the M’Zab, lies inside the valley itself and is covered on the sightseeing and walking pages. The excursions below are the realistic options beyond the valley. Distances are approximate and come from secondary sources.
Metlili
Metlili is a Chaamba oasis about 40 to 45 km south of Ghardaïa. Its old ksar is listed by OPVM, the body that manages the valley’s heritage, and the area is known for camel breeding. The town also hosts the Okadiate popular poetry festival, so ask locally whether a date falls during your trip. Allow a half day including the drive, and ask a local agency or guide about the road and the current situation.
Sebseb
Sebseb lies south of Metlili, about 60 km from Ghardaïa by road. It is reached for its desert scenery and dunes, and it is a longer day than Metlili. Go with a local agency or guide rather than driving yourself, check fuel before you leave and expect patchy mobile coverage once you are out of town.
Zelfana thermal station
Zelfana is about 65 to 67 km east of Ghardaïa. The thermal station was founded in 1975, the water comes out at around 40 degrees C, and the town has hotels and pools. It makes a restful change after walking the stepped lanes of the ksour. Check opening hours, entry rules and swimwear requirements before you go, and ask whether any sessions are separated by gender.
What to leave off the list
Tassili n’Ajjer near Djanet and the Hoggar near Tamanrasset are more than 1,000 km from Ghardaïa and are not day trips. Algiers, Oran and Constantine are also far outside day-trip range. Berriane and Guerrara are not covered here: the valley has seen communal tensions in the past, so follow your guide’s advice about which places to visit.
Planning the day
Plan around the weather. October to April is the comfortable season, summer afternoons are extremely hot and winter nights can approach freezing. Take water, sun protection and cash in dinars, and carry photo ID for checkpoints. Drones, binoculars and some camera equipment need authorisation, so leave them at your hotel unless you hold a permit.
Most excursions work best with a local agency or guide who knows current road and security conditions. Compare options on GetYourGuide and check the FCDO safety guidance before you commit. The OPVM site has more on the heritage sites around the valley.
