Day Trips From Lindos: Rhodes Town, Symi
Lindos sits at the end of the road on the southeast coast of Rhodes, so nearly every day trip runs back towards Rhodes Town, about 50 km north. The village itself is the main attraction, and a full day here is easy to fill. The options below suit travellers who have a second or third day and want to see more of the island.
Rhodes Town and the Old Town
The most practical day trip is the UNESCO-listed Medieval City of Rhodes. The KTEL bus from Lindos costs about €5.50 each way, takes roughly 1 to 1 hour 45 minutes, and has several departures a day in summer, fewer in winter. Check ktelrodou.gr for current times. In the Old Town, walk the Street of the Knights and visit the Palace of the Grand Master, which has its own ticket price. The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes is also in town. Start early so the day is not spent mostly on the road.
Symi
Boats to the island of Symi do not leave from Lindos. They sail from Rhodes Town, from Mandraki harbour or the main port, and the crossing takes about 50 minutes to 1.5 hours. Day boats usually include a stop at the Panormitis Monastery. Fast-boat tours with hotel pickup in Lindos exist, at around €38 to €65 through resellers, which saves the bus ride. Book ahead in July and August. See Symi day trips for current listings.
Prasonisi
Prasonisi is the far southern tip of Rhodes, a sandbar between two seas and a centre for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It is best reached by car, and you should allow over an hour each way from Lindos. Check wind and sandbar conditions before you set out, since the wind decides whether the beach is calm or rough.
Kallithea Springs
Kallithea Springs lies north of Rhodes Town, well beyond Lindos, and is a long day from here. It is a restored Art Deco bathhouse by the sea, with swimming from rock platforms rather than a sandy beach. Entry is about €5 for adults and about €3 for ages 12 to 18, and the price can be lower off season.
Closer to Lindos
For a short outing, walk down to St Paul’s Bay in about 15 minutes, past the ancient theatre. The small bay has rock entry, so bring water shoes. Add a swim and a meal at Tambakio, the beach restaurant on the bay.
Distances to keep in mind
Several well-known sights, including the Valley of the Butterflies, Kamiros and Monolithos, are on the west and northwest side of the island, far across the mountains. They are separate day trips from Rhodes Town or the west coast, not quick additions from Lindos. For a trip to Faliraki WaterPark, count about 35 km north on the east coast.
Heat and fire
Summer afternoons regularly pass 35 C in July and August, so start early and carry water. Wildfire risk is high from April to October, and the UK government travel advice says to follow local guidance and the 112 alerts.
