Day Trips From Klaipeda by Ferry and Bus
The best day out from Klaipėda is the Curonian Spit, and the second is Palanga on the coast to the north. Both work without a car. A few more places suit anyone with wheels. Prices are in euros.
Curonian Spit: Juodkrantė, Nagliai and Nida
The spit is a UNESCO-listed strip of dunes and pine forest, and its northern 52 km belongs to Lithuania. Lithuania borders Russia’s Kaliningrad region at the south end of the spit, so check your government’s travel advice before you go.
Getting there:
- On foot or by bus. Take the Old Ferry from E. Galvanausko bul. 1 to Smiltynė. A round-trip passenger ticket is EUR 1.70.
- Bus. The Smiltynė to Nida bus stops at Alksnynė, Juodkrantė, Pervalka, Preila and Nida. A ticket is EUR 8.00 per person, and a bicycle costs EUR 10.00. It runs about every two hours, not hourly. In October 2026 weekday departures from Smiltynė are at 07:10, 09:10, 11:20, 13:10, 15:10, 17:10, 18:10 and 21:10. From 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027 the times move to 15 minutes past the hour, and weekend times differ. See the Visit Neringa bus page .
- Car. The car ferry from Nemuno g. 8 costs EUR 23.20 return. On top of that comes the Neringa vehicle fee, which is EUR 10 from 21 August to 19 June and EUR 50 from 20 June to 20 August. An electric car pays EUR 25 in the summer window and nothing in the rest of the year. You can pay at the Alksnynė control post or in advance on the UNIPARK site .
Nida is about 50 km from Smiltynė by road. Stops worth the time:
- Hill of Witches, Juodkrantė. A wooded dune walk with about 80 wooden sculptures of witches, devils and folk figures, begun in 1979. It is free and open at any hour.
- Nagliai Dead Dunes. The trail is about 1 km long, roughly half reinforced surface and half sand, and starts at km 32 of the Smiltynė to Nida road. It is seasonal. In 2026 it ran from 17 April to 18 October, so it is shut in winter. Adults pay EUR 5, students and seniors EUR 2, by card only. Stay on the marked trail. Details are on the Nagliai trail page .
- Nida. The Parnidis Dune has wooden stairs and marked paths, and visitors should stay on them and not climb or slide down the dune faces. The Thomas Mann Memorial Museum is at Skruzdynės g. 17 and costs about EUR 3 for adults, with hours that differ between summer and winter.
Palanga
Palanga is about 25 km north of Klaipėda. Buses take roughly 25 to 35 minutes, with fares from about EUR 4. The Amber Museum is in the Tiškevičius Palace in Birutė Park. It costs EUR 8, or EUR 4 reduced, from 15 May to 15 September, and EUR 6, or EUR 3 reduced, from 16 September to 14 May. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays. The town also has a long wooden pier for sunset walks. Prices are on the Palanga Amber Museum page .
Dutchman’s Cap
Dutchman’s Cap (Olando kepurė) is a coastal cliff of about 24 m in Seaside Regional Park, roughly 2 km north of Giruliai. A path leads through coastal woodland to the viewpoint. It is easiest to reach by car or by bike along the coast.
Plokštinė Cold War Museum
The Cold War exhibition is in Žemaitija National Park, in the Plungė district about 8 km from Plateliai. Adults pay about EUR 10, or about EUR 12 in July and August. It is best reached by car.
