Garni and Geghard Tours from Yerevan
Travel advice, as of October 2026: the UK FCDO advises against all travel within 5 km of Armenia’s eastern border with Azerbaijan and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. Geghard, in Kotayk Province, is outside both. Current wording is on gov.uk .
What a standard tour covers
Most tours from Yerevan string together the same stops: Charents Arch on the Garni road, Garni Temple, the Symphony of the Stones in the gorge below it, Geghard Monastery, and often a lavash baking class or lunch in Garni. Expect 5 to 6 hours in total. Geghard itself is free to enter, so the cost of a tour is the transport, the guide and the paid stops.
Group departures
Hyur Service lists a Garni, Symphony of the Stones, Geghard and lavash baking day at 28 EUR per person. It runs about 5 to 6 hours, leaves at 10:00 on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays, and is offered in English and Russian. The listing does not say whether entrance fees are included, so ask when you book. If the gorge road is closed, the Symphony stop is swapped for a sujukh-making class. Other operators on tour marketplaces list group tours at roughly 26 to 28 USD per person. Departure days change with the season, so check the calendar for your date.
Private cars and guides
A private half-day tour from Yerevan was listed on tkt.am in July 2026 at 45,000 AMD per group, with entrance tickets on top: about 1,500 AMD per person for Garni Temple and 200 AMD per person for the Symphony of the Stones. Marketplaces list about 116 EUR per person for a Khor Virap, Garni and Geghard day. A private day that adds Lake Sevan and Sevanavank is listed at 7 to 8 hours. Private cars suit people who want to reach Geghard early, before the groups.
Operators to look at
One Way Tour runs regular Garni and Geghard tours with lavash baking, and Yerani Travel is a tour operator at yeranitravel.com . Ask each for a written quote that states the price per person and what it covers.
Questions to ask before you pay
- Are the Garni Temple and Symphony tickets included?
- How long do you stay at Geghard? A walk through the rock-cut churches and the upper chamber needs unhurried time.
- Does the guide cover the church history, or is the visit a photo stop?
- What happens if the Symphony road is closed?
- Is there a dress code reminder? Shoulders and knees should be covered at the monastery.
Entry costs on the day
Geghard Monastery is free, with parking about 200 AMD and donations welcome. Garni Temple is about 1,500 AMD for foreign visitors, 750 AMD for residents, students and pensioners, and free for children under 12. The Symphony of the Stones booth charges about 300 AMD. Carry cash.
