Koblenz With Kids: Cable Car and Fortress
Family days in Koblenz
Koblenz works well for families with children of primary-school age and up. The old centre is flat, the attractions are close together, and the best rides and play areas are outdoors. Several of them are seasonal, so the time of year decides the plan.
A cable car over the Rhine
The cable car from Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer carries passengers about 112 metres above the river to the fortress on Ehrenbreitstein. Children can watch freight barges and cruise ships passing below. On the combined ticket with fortress entry, children aged 7 to 17 pay 8.90 EUR and under sevens go free. In 2026 the cable car ran until 1 November and then paused for the winter, so look at the cable car website for the next opening date.
The fortress grounds
Festung Ehrenbreitstein has an outdoor climbing playground with wooden towers, rope bridges and slides. Inside, children can walk through the dark artillery passages and look at the 1524 bronze siege cannon Greif. Plan on a half day. Fortress entry alone costs 10 EUR for adults, and the fortress is open all year, with shorter hours of about 11:00 to 16:00 in winter.
The spitting boy fountain
The Schängelbrunnen stands in the courtyard of the Town Hall on Jesuitenplatz. A bronze boy spits a jet of water every few minutes, usually at someone who is not paying attention. It is free and takes ten minutes, so it fits between other stops.
Swimming and indoor pools
Freibad Oberwerth, on Haydnstraße, is the main summer outdoor pool. It has a 50 metre pool, a 10 metre diving tower, paddling areas and a water slide. It opened for the 2026 season on 22 May and is open from 08:00 to 20:00 in summer. The Moselbad on Ferdinand-Sauerbruch-Straße is a municipal pool and sauna complex that opened in August 2024, and it is the indoor option when the weather turns.
Keep children away from the water’s edge on the Rhine. It is a busy shipping channel with a strong current, and nobody should swim in it.
Geysir Andernach
Andernach is about 20 km north of Koblenz. A visit combines a hands-on science centre about the volcano and the geyser, a boat trip across the Rhine and the eruption itself, which reaches up to 60 metres. The ticket costs 21.50 EUR for adults and 12.50 EUR for children up to 16, and children under one metre are free. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours. The 2026 season ended on 31 October, and the geyser takes a winter break until about late March.
Animals
Koblenz does not have a zoo or an aquarium. The nearest zoo is Zoo Neuwied, about 15 km north of the city, so families who want animals should plan that as a separate outing.
Getting around
Everything in the old centre is reachable on foot or with a pushchair, and the riverside promenade is flat and paved. Cards work in most places, but small taverns and bakery stands often want cash.
