Attractions and guided visits in Black River District
The best-known paid attractions in Black River District sit in two clusters: the Chamarel plateau in the hills, and the Casela park near the coast at Cascavelle. All prices are in Mauritian rupees (Rs) and apply to non-resident visitors.
Chamarel plateau
Chamarel 7 Coloured Earth Geopark. Adults pay Rs 800, children aged 5 to 11 pay Rs 400, and under-5s are free. Opening hours are 08:30 to 17:30 from October to May, with the last ticket at 17:00, and 08:30 to 17:00 from June to September. One ticket covers the sand dunes with their bands of red, brown, violet and green, both viewpoints over the Chamarel Waterfall, and the Aldabra giant tortoise park. The dunes and the waterfall are viewed from walkways and platforms. Visitors cannot walk on the dunes, hike down to the waterfall or swim at its base. Cash must be rupees; cards (not Diners) and local mobile payment also work.
Ebony Forest. This conservation reserve protects native ebony forest and endemic birds. The Take A Drive jeep tour lasts two hours and costs Rs 1,600 for adults and Rs 1,080 for ages 5 to 17, with under-5s free and 10 percent off online. A guided trek of 3 to 4 hours starts from 09:00 for a minimum of two adults and costs Rs 2,500 for adults and Rs 1,650 for ages 5 to 17.
La Rhumerie de Chamarel. The working distillery makes rum from sugarcane juice and offers a guided visit and tasting. Check the official site for current prices and opening days before you drive up. Its restaurant, L’Alchimiste, serves Creole and European dishes, and booking ahead is wise.
Curious Corner of Chamarel. Across the road from the geopark gate, this walk-through attraction has optical illusions, a mirror maze and an upside-down house. It is a good wet-weather stop on the plateau.
Casela Nature Parks
The 350 hectare park opens daily from 09:00 to 17:00 and is closed on 25 December and 1 January. The main attractions are the African Safari, the walk-through aviary, the Tulawaka toboggan, zip lines and quad biking. Non-resident adult tickets start from roughly Rs 1,300 to 1,600, so check booking.caselaparks.com for today’s price. The park also sells big-cat encounters. Animal welfare groups discourage captive big-cat contact, so this guide points you to the safari and aviary instead.
Scenic flights
The so-called underwater waterfall off the southwest tip of the Le Morne peninsula is an optical illusion of sand sliding down the sea floor, and it can be seen only from the air. Shared 15 minute helicopter flights are resold from about 190 to 220 EUR or USD per person, while private charters cost far more. Check who the operator is before paying a reseller.
Tips
- The B104 road up from Case Noyale is narrow with hairpin bends, and driving at night is not advised.
- Resold tickets and tours cost more than the gate price, so compare a reseller’s figure with the official one first.
- Rain is common on the plateau, which makes Curious Corner and the Ebony Forest jeep tour useful fallbacks.
