Wieliczka Sights Above and Below Ground
Wieliczka’s sights split into two groups: the chambers and exhibits underground, and a handful of historic buildings and a painted square above. The surface landmarks are all within about a 15-minute walk of each other, so a full day covers both.
Underground: the museum and the chapel
The Tourist Route passes the underground exhibition of the Kraków Saltworks Museum on Level III, 135 m below the surface. It shows the giant timber treadwheels that hoisted salt and rock to the surface, along with mining tools, crystal specimens from the Crystal Grottoes and old miners’ uniforms. The exhibition is part of the standard ticket. The Chapel of St Kinga, about 101 m down, is carved entirely from salt, and the route also passes brine lakes and the 1698 St Anthony’s Chapel. Every visit is guided and takes 2 to 3 hours.
The two shafts
The Daniłowicz Shaft was sunk between 1635 and 1640 and is now the main arrival point, ticket hall and start of the Tourist Route. The Regis Shaft stands in the town centre on plac Kościuszki and goes back to the 14th century. It was rebuilt in the 19th century and keeps a brick tower, and the Miners’ Route begins there.
Upper Market Square and Solny Świat
The market square was laid out when the town received its charter in 1290. A 350-square-metre trompe-l’œil painting by Ryszard Paprocki, made in 2010, covers part of the paving. From the marked viewing spot it looks like an open salt abyss with miners working far below. It is free to see at any hour.
Churches and the monastery
Keep your voice low in all three, because these are working places of worship.
- Church of St Sebastian, on ulica św. Sebastiana: a larch-wood church built in 1578 and consecrated in 1584 after a plague. Włodzimierz Tetmajer painted the Art Nouveau murals inside between 1903 and 1910, with floral motifs and portraits of local miners. Entry is free outside Mass hours.
- Church of St Clement, at ulica Zamkowa 2: dedicated to the patron saint of salt miners, rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1804 to 1806. A free-standing 17th-century bell tower beside it was funded by Sebastiano Montelupi. See wieliczkaklemens.pl for the parish.
- Franciscan monastery, at ulica Braterska 1: an early Baroque monastery founded in 1623, home to the icon of Our Lady of Grace. The courtyard has a Garden of the Stations of the Cross and a replica of the Porziuncola chapel from Assisi.

Saltworks Castle
The Saltworks Castle on ulica Zamkowa, built in the late 13th century, served as the administrative seat of the Kraków salt enterprise until 1945. It is closed to visitors while the final modernisation stage is under way, with reopening planned for 2028. Do not plan to enter the building or courtyard. Its museum pages are at muzeum.wieliczka.pl .
Graduation Tower
The blackthorn Graduation Tower in St Kinga Park covers about 3,200 square metres and has a 22.5 m viewing tower. Entry is 10 PLN and it opens from spring to autumn. Allow about 30 minutes.
