Multi-Day Trips from Utrecht
Utrecht sits at the centre of the Dutch rail network, so one hotel can serve several days of exploring. Amsterdam is 27 minutes away, The Hague 37 and Rotterdam 38, and Schiphol Airport 30. These two plans use the city as a base and return you to it each night. Transit is paid by tapping a contactless bank card or phone at every gate, on entering and leaving.
A three-day plan
Day 1: the medieval core. Start with the 10:00 guided climb of the Dom Tower, 465 steps. Adults pay 13.50 euros, and tickets are sold at domtoren.nl . Walk across Domplein to the Domkerk and the Pandhof cloister garden, then eat on a wharf along the Oudegracht. The afternoon fits the Centraal Museum (Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00) and the Rietveld Schröder House, which needs a timed slot booked online at rietveldschroderhuis.nl , up to three months ahead. Finish with dinner at Stadskasteel Oudaen.
Day 2: trains and a castle. Take the NS train to the Spoorwegmuseum at Maliebaanstation in the morning. In the afternoon, take a train to Vleuten and a local bus or bike to Kasteel de Haar, checking times on 9292.nl. Castle and gardens cost 21.50 euros, and castle slots should be reserved. Have dinner on Twijnstraat.
Day 3: the River Vecht. Rent a bicycle and ride north along the winding Vecht. The route passes Oud-Zuilen and Slot Zuylen, the 18th-century castle where the writer Belle van Zuylen lived, then Maarssen and Breukelen, the town that gave Brooklyn in New York its name. Along the way stand dozens of country houses built by wealthy Amsterdam merchants in the 17th and 18th centuries. Tourist bike rental in the city costs about 12 to 15 euros for 24 hours for a standard bike, and 25 to 30 for an e-bike, with a deposit and photo ID.
A five-day regional circuit
Days 1 and 2: Cover the core city: the Dom Tower, DOMunder, Museum Speelklok and the Nijntje Museum, plus a morning on the canals by canoe.
Day 3: Amersfoort and Soesterberg. Ride the 15-minute train to Amersfoort for the Koppelpoort, the Muurhuizen and the Mondriaanhuis. In the afternoon visit the Nationaal Militair Museum at Soesterberg.
Day 4: Oudewater and Gouda. Take a regional bus to Oudewater to be weighed at the Heksenwaag, open Tuesday to Sunday from 1 April to 1 November. Continue by bus or bike to Gouda for the town hall, the stained glass of St. John’s church and the cheese market.
Day 5: Amsterdam or The Hague. Amsterdam Centraal is 27 minutes by direct train, for the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. The Hague is 37 minutes, for the Mauritshuis, the Peace Palace and Scheveningen beach. Sleeping in Utrecht avoids the high Amsterdam hotel rates.
Places that do not fit
Zeeland’s beaches take 2.5 to 3 hours each way by public transport, so they suit a separate trip rather than a stop from Utrecht.
Tips
Book the Dom Tower, the Rietveld Schröder House and the Kasteel de Haar castle slots early, because all three limit numbers. Museumkaart holders still need a reserved slot at the Rietveld house and the Spoorwegmuseum. Pay by card almost everywhere.
