Walks in and Around Stepantsminda
Travel advisory, October 2026. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to Russian-occupied South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and against all but essential travel to areas right beside their administrative boundary lines. The US State Department rates Georgia as a whole Level 1 and the two occupied regions Level 4, Do Not Travel. South Ossetia lies close to the Truso Valley, so stay on the marked track, carry your passport and never walk toward the boundary. Mountain rescue can be slow, so hire a guide for glacier and summit terrain.
Stepantsminda is a small town at 1,740 m, and on foot the interest lies in a few short routes rather than a long town circuit. The main walk is the trail to Gergeti Trinity Church. Around it sit a short stroll through the centre, the waterfall trail at Gveleti and an easy roadside walk in the Sno valley. For a guided walk, ask at your guesthouse, since operators come and go. Pay for guides, taxis and snacks in Georgian lari (GEL), in cash.
Gergeti church trail
The route starts in Gergeti village, across the Tergi river from the town centre, and climbs about 450 to 520 m to the church at 2,170 m. The whole outing is 6 to 7 km return and takes 3 to 4 hours, with 1 to 1.5 hours of climbing. You can take the direct rocky path through the ravine or the gentler winding path through the pines, and sturdy boots are worth wearing. A preserved Mokhevian tower stands beside the trail in Gergeti village, and it makes a good first photo stop.
Entry to the church is free. It is an active church, so shoulders and knees must be covered, women cover their hair and wear a long skirt, and men take off hats and wear long trousers. Aprons, scarves and wraps are lent at the door. Photography and video inside are not allowed, and drones are banned. From November to February snow and ice make the trail slippery. A paved road also reaches the church if you would rather ride.
Town centre and the Kazbegi Museum
A stroll around the centre is short. The main square has the marshrutka stops, the Delica hub, bakeries and ATMs. The Kazbegi Museum, in the house of the writer Alexander Kazbegi at Kazbegi Street 2, is a short walk away. Listed hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:30, with a 5 GEL ticket, but the museum has been reported as temporarily closed, so check before you go.
Gveleti waterfall trail
About 7 km north of town, a short rocky trail splits at a fork. The small fall is 10 to 15 minutes from the fork, and the big fall, about 30 m high, is 15 to 45 minutes away depending on where you start. The last part is a scramble over rocky steps. Allow 1.5 to 3 hours, and use boots with grip.
Sno stone heads
On the Sno valley road, carved stone heads by the sculptor Merab Piranishvili stand beside the road. You can drive to Sno and then walk between the heads. Ask your driver how far they are from town.
Walking farther
Longer walks need planning. Truso Valley is a mostly flat 18 to 22 km return walk to Zakagori Fortress, where border guards are posted, so carry your passport and keep to the track. Juta and Chaukhi Lake is about 13 km return, with the last 2.6 km of road to Juta reported closed to vehicles. Both are covered under day trips .
