A Romantic Stay in Wieliczka
Romance in Wieliczka is quiet and compact. There are no lakes, river cruises or mountain viewpoints, and the stream that runs through town is small. What the town does offer is a salt-carved chapel deep underground, a four-star hotel next to the mine, a hilltop wooden church and an easy town walk. It suits a short overnight stay better than a long holiday.
The Chapel of St Kinga
The most atmospheric spot is the Chapel of St Kinga, about 101 m underground on the Tourist Route. It is 54 m long, 18 m wide and 12 m high, and every wall, altar and chandelier was carved from rock salt by miners between 1896 and 1963. The chandeliers are made of salt crystals, and one wall carries a relief of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. Check the mine’s events listing for anything scheduled during your visit. The Tourist Route is guided, takes 2 to 3 hours and has about 800 steps. The air stays at 17 to 18°C.
The Miners’ Route does not visit the chapel, so book the Tourist Route for this.
A night at Hotel Grand Sal
Hotel Grand Sal is a 4-star hotel at Park Kingi 7, in St Kinga Park beside the mine. It has a spa, a sauna and a restaurant. The mine sells a package that combines a visit with a night at the hotel, advertised from about 499 to 529 PLN per person on its official pages, so confirm the current figure. Other places to stay can be compared on Booking.com .
The mine also runs an overnight programme called Zdrowy Sen, 135 m underground. It is a health-resort stay in a shared chamber with 28 places, 13 to 14.5°C air and no food on sale, and it carries medical contraindications. It is not a private room or a romantic suite, so book it only through the resort and only if the health conditions suit you both.
A walk through town
Start at the Graduation Tower in St Kinga Park, where a 22.5 m viewing tower overlooks the blackthorn brine wall. It costs 10 PLN and is open from spring to autumn, with opening dates posted online. From there, walk to the Upper Market Square, which dates from the town’s charter in 1290, and stand on the marked spot to see the anamorphic painting Solny Świat. A longer climb leads to the wooden Church of St Sebastian, built in 1578, whose interior murals were painted between 1903 and 1910 by Włodzimierz Tetmajer. It is free to enter outside Mass hours.
Dinner
Karczma Górnicza, a Polish restaurant on the Tourist Route at 125 m, suits a lunch stop. For an evening meal beside the mine, the Hotel Grand Sal restaurant is the surface option. For a wider choice of dinner places, take the SKA train, about 20 to 25 minutes, into Kraków.
