Wieliczka with Children
Families can fill a day in Wieliczka without leaving a compact area. The main event is the salt mine, and a park, a salt Graduation Tower and an indoor pool round out the day. This page covers what suits different ages, what to leave at home and where the hard limits are.
Going underground with children
The Tourist Route has no minimum age, and children up to 4 enter free. The walk is about 3.5 km and takes 2 to 3 hours, with about 800 steps in total. The first stretch is the longest: roughly 380 steps down a wooden staircase to Level I at 64 m. A lift brings visitors back up from the deepest point at 135 m. The temperature is 17 to 18°C, so pack a light jacket.
Practical points for parents:
- Large prams cannot go down. A folding umbrella stroller is allowed, but there is nowhere underground to leave it.
- Only a small bag, up to 20 x 20 x 35 cm, may be taken along. Bigger bags and prams go in the free luggage storage in the Górnik building during opening hours.
- Torches and open flames are banned underground, so do not promise children a flashlight adventure.
- Toilets are next to the shaft and at two places underground. Karczma Górnicza, a Polish restaurant, sits 125 m down, and Bistro Posolone is beside the Daniłowicz Shaft.
- Every tour is led by a guide, and groups of up to 40 stay together.
Family tour for ages 5 to 12
Śladami Legend (Following the Legends) is the mine’s own tour for families with children aged 5 to 12. It features a meeting with the Skarbnik, the legendary spirit of the mine, and costs from about 105 PLN per person. Tickets are sold online, and the schedule changes, so check it on bilety.kopalnia.pl before choosing a date. The Miners’ Route is for ages 10 and over.
Above ground
- Graduation Tower: the blackthorn brine tower in St Kinga Park has a 22.5 m viewing tower. Entry is 10 PLN, children up to 4 are free, and it is open from spring to autumn. About 30 minutes is enough. The official site only suggests consulting a doctor if you have health concerns, so treat it as a walk, not a treatment for children.
- Park Adama Mickiewicza: a 9-hectare town park off ulica Parkowa and ulica Ogrodowa, with playgrounds, duck ponds and shaded benches.
- Solne Miasto: the recreation centre at ulica Kościuszki 15 has a full-size indoor pool, saunas, a climbing wall and a cinema. Details are on solnemiasto.eu .
Animals and water parks
Wieliczka has no zoo and no water park, and the only pool in town is at Solne Miasto. Kraków Zoo is in the Wolski Forest on the far side of Kraków, and Park Wodny Kraków is in the north of the city. Both are separate outings and are best treated as a different day.
