Romantic Stays and Evenings in Tunisia
Travel advice, 31 October 2026. Tunisia carries a Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) rating from the US State Department, and the UK FCDO (updated 24 July 2026) advises against all or all-but-essential travel to some border and military areas. Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advice before booking; some border and military areas are closed to tourists. The places below are on the main tourist circuit.
Sunset in Sidi Bou Said
Sidi Bou Said is the best-known romantic stop, a clifftop village of white walls and blue shutters above the Gulf of Tunis. Its streets are pedestrian, and they quieten as the day visitors leave. Take a table at Cafe des Nattes or Cafe Sidi Chabaane (also called Cafe des Delices) for sunset over the water. The classic order is sweet mint tea with toasted pine nuts, called the aux pignons. La Villa Bleue is a boutique hotel in the village, and listings show cliff-edge rooms. Check current rates and availability before you plan around it.
Palace hotels in the Tunis medina
Several restored houses in the medina take guests behind plain wooden doors into courtyards with fountains, tilework and lanterns. Dar El Jeld Hotel and Spa has a traditional hammam and a rooftop restaurant over the minarets, and Dar Ben Gacem is a restored house in the old city. Both appear on booking listings, so confirm rooms and spa hours directly. Evenings in the medina are quiet, and the lanes are best walked before the shops close.
Spa and hammam time for two
Seawater spa centres at hotels in Gammarth, Hammamet and Djerba offer couples’ massage and hydrotherapy packages. A traditional neighbourhood hammam is different: sessions are split by gender, with women’s hours usually in the morning and early afternoon and men’s later, so couples will not share the room. If you want to go together, choose a hotel spa that has private rooms.
The Sahara after dark
Anantara Sahara Tozeur Resort and Villas is a luxury resort at the edge of the dunes, with private-pool villas and a spa. It was listed and Michelin-keyed in 2025, so confirm that it is trading and check its current offers. Desert camps near Douz and Tembaine advertise canvas tents with real beds and candlelit dinners by a fire. Camp Mars appears on booking sites with inconsistent location details, and it needs a 4WD, so confirm the route and transfers with the camp before you travel. Go with a licensed local operator, and between October and April, when nights are cold and days are sunny.
On the road from Tozeur to Kebili, stay on the raised P16 causeway across Chott el Djerid. The chott is a salt pan with soft mud, and there is no boating or swimming.
Quiet corners of Djerba
The interior of Djerba has traditional whitewashed houses, called menzels, with courtyards and gardens, and quiet stretches of beach. The harbour at Houmt Souk is the place for a seafood dinner. Djerba is more than 500 km from Tunis, so fly in or plan it as part of a longer trip.
Public affection and dress
Couples holding hands are a common sight in Tunis and the resort towns. Kissing and embracing in public are not appropriate, particularly in medinas, near mosques and in rural towns. Cover your shoulders and knees when you walk through old quarters.
Practical points
Pay in Tunisian dinars. Carry a card, exchange cash on arrival and keep your slips. The best seasons are spring and autumn, and winter for the desert.
