Victoria Falls Town with Children
Victoria Falls Town works well for families who plan around the river and the wildlife. Age limits matter more here than almost anywhere, so this page is organised by the age a child needs to be.
Any age: the rainforest walk
The path through Victoria Falls National Park is paved and runs along the edge of the gorge opposite the falls. Park entry for international visitors is about US$58 per adult. Under 6s enter free and under 12s pay half price. Tickets are single entry, so leaving the turnstile for lunch means paying again.
Spray can soak everyone in the wetter months, so bring ponchos and a dry bag for phones. The stone is slippery. Danger Point and some other viewpoints have low barriers or none, so hold small children by the hand for the whole walk and do not let anyone climb on ledges.
Any age: the Boma dinner
The Boma at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge serves dinner in the evening only, roughly 19:00 to 22:00. Every guest is given a drum to play in the group drumming, which keeps children busy. Booking is essential in the high season. Take a taxi or a lodge transfer rather than walking afterwards, because elephants and buffalo move through the streets and hotel grounds after dark.
From about age 4: a Chobe river cruise
A boat on the Chobe River in Botswana gets families close to elephants, hippos and crocodiles without hours in a dusty vehicle. Ask the operator about the youngest age accepted. The day starts early, and the KAZA UniVisa covers same-day entry into Botswana through Kazungula. An overnight stay in Botswana voids it.
From about age 6: canopy zipline
The Wild Horizons Batoka Gorge Canopy Tour links nine zipline cables and one cable suspension bridge along the gorge edge. It suits first-time zipliners from about age 6.
Animals without the risk
Wild Horizons runs the Elephant Encounter at its sanctuary. It is a non-riding visit, and ZimParks adds a US$24 levy, with half price for children under 12. For wild animals, a game drive in Zambezi National Park costs US$17 for international visitors at the gate.
Age limits to know
- Rafting: minimum age 15.
- Devil’s Pool on Livingstone Island, Zambia: children under 10 cannot join, and children under 12 cannot swim in the pools.
- Helicopter flight: the ZimParks levy is US$18, and children under 12 pay half.
Health and safety
Malaria is present, so ask a doctor about tablets for each family member. Nobody should swim or wade in the Zambezi, because of crocodiles and hippos. Keep room doors and windows latched, since baboons and warthogs wander through hotel grounds.
