Wieliczka as a Two Day Base
Wieliczka is a half-day to one-day destination. The salt mine, the surface shafts, the Graduation Tower, the market square and the wooden church on the hill add up to a single full day, and no wilderness or resort area sits behind them. A stay of two days works when you use the town as a quieter base and spend the second day on two nearby sites, Bochnia and Niepołomice.
Day 1: the mine and the old town
Morning. Take the Tourist Route from the Daniłowicz Shaft. It lasts 2 to 3 hours, covers about 3.5 km and has about 800 steps. Underground it is 17 to 18°C. The ticket includes the Kraków Saltworks Museum’s underground exhibition. Tours are guided, and online booking at bilety.kopalnia.pl is the safe route because time slots can sell out.
Lunch. Karczma Górnicza serves Polish food 125 m underground on the Tourist Route. On the surface, Bistro Posolone stands next to the Daniłowicz Shaft, and the Hotel Grand Sal has a restaurant.
Afternoon. Walk through St Kinga Park to the Graduation Tower, which costs 10 PLN and is open from spring to autumn. Continue to the Upper Market Square for the 3D painting Solny Świat, then uphill to the 1578 wooden Church of St Sebastian with its Tetmajer murals.
Overnight. Hotel Grand Sal is a 4-star hotel at Park Kingi 7, beside the mine, with a spa, a sauna and a restaurant. The mine sells a package of a visit plus a night at the hotel, quoted at about 499 to 529 PLN per person on its official pages, so confirm the current price when you book. Rooms elsewhere can be compared on Booking.com .
The underground night
The health resort offers one night at 135 m in the Stajnia Gór Wschodnich chamber, called Zdrowy Sen. It has 28 places, a temperature of 13 to 14.5°C, and children over 4 may stay with an adult. No food is sold underground, and medical contraindications apply. This is a health programme booked through the resort at zdrowie@kopalnia.pl , not a general hotel booking.
Day 2: Bochnia and Niepołomice
Bochnia. The Bochnia Salt Mine is about 25 km east, 20 to 25 minutes by train or road. It has an underground train, a boat crossing and multimedia routes that take 3 to 4 hours depending on the route. It is closed on 1 November 2026, and tour times vary by season, so check kopalnia-bochnia.pl .
Niepołomice. The royal castle is about 15 km north-east of Wieliczka, with a Renaissance arcaded courtyard and hunting collections. The surrounding forest covers about 110 square kilometres and has cycling trails. Visitors who want to see the bison breeding centre should check with the Niepołomice Forest District first. The castle website lists opening times.

Planning notes
The SKA train from Kraków Główny to Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia takes about 20 to 25 minutes, and the mine is a few minutes’ walk from the station. Poland uses the złoty, not the euro, and cards are accepted at the mine and in the town. Allow a third day if you also want time in Kraków itself, which is the easiest add-on by train.
