Day Trips from Wieliczka
Wieliczka itself fills a half day, which makes it an easy base for short trips around Małopolska. Kraków is on the doorstep, a second salt mine lies to the east, and a royal castle and an ancient forest are within a short drive. Distances below are measured from Wieliczka.
Kraków (half or full day)
Kraków is about 13 km north-west. The SKA1 line of Koleje Małopolskie links Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia with Kraków Główny in about 20 to 25 minutes, with trains roughly every 30 minutes. The timetable is on the operator’s website . The city offers the Main Market Square, Wawel Royal Castle and Cathedral, the Kazimierz quarter and Schindler’s Factory in Podgórze. Check current fares at the ticket machine or the operator’s site before you travel.
Bochnia Salt Mine (half day)
Bochnia lies about 25 km east, 20 to 25 minutes by train or about 25 minutes by road along the A4 and DK94. The mine is quieter than Wieliczka and more industrial in feel. Its attractions include an underground train, a boat crossing for visitors from age 3 and a multimedia route. A 140 m slide in the Wazyn chamber is for ages 9 and over and comes only with that chamber’s stay option. Routes take 3 to 4 hours depending on which you choose, and tour times vary by season. The mine is closed on 1 November 2026. Details are on kopalnia-bochnia.pl .
Niepołomice castle and forest (half day)
Niepołomice is about 15 km north-east, roughly 20 minutes by car or local bus. The 14th-century royal hunting castle is often called the Second Wawel and has a Renaissance courtyard with arcades. Its museum collections cover hunting art and Christian iconography; see the castle website for opening times. The Niepołomice Forest covers about 110 square kilometres and has cycling trails. The European bison breeding centre in the Poszyna area is watched from a tower or viewpoint outside the enclosure, and access may depend on the Forest District, so ask the Niepołomice Forest District before you go.
Ojców National Park (full day)
Ojców is about 35 km north-west, 45 to 50 minutes by car via the Kraków bypass. Public transport from Wieliczka is impractical because it means changing in Kraków. The park has a limestone gorge, Łokietek Cave, the rock pillar known as Hercules’ Club and the Renaissance Pieskowa Skała Castle.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oświęcim is a memorial and museum, not a leisure outing, and a visit deserves a day of its own. It lies about 75 to 80 km west of Wieliczka, around 1 hour 15 minutes by car on the A4 toll motorway. By public transport, travel via Kraków and expect about 2.5 to 3 hours each way, door to door. The Memorial is about 2 km from Oświęcim station, and buses stop beside the Museum.
Entry cards for individual visitors are issued online only at visit.auschwitz.org , with none at the gate. Admission to the grounds is free with an entry card, while guide services are paid. A guided tour takes about 3.5 hours, bags are limited to 35 x 25 x 15 cm, and visitors are asked to dress and behave with due solemnity. The Memorial’s visiting page lists the current rules.
