Things to Do in Lautoka: Markets and Hikes
Lautoka at a Glance
Lautoka is Fiji’s second city, on the west coast of Viti Levu about 30 minutes by road from Nadi Airport. It is a working sugar and cruise port, so the harbour is for sunsets rather than swimming. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$). Cyclone season runs from 1 November to 30 April, and rip currents form near reefs and river mouths, so swim where lifeguards are on duty and use licensed boat operators.
Lautoka Municipal Market
The market sits beside the bus station, between Naviti, Vakabale and Yasawa streets. It opens Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 17:30 and Saturday from 06:00 to 15:30, and it is closed on Sunday apart from the fish market, which runs from 07:00 to 12:00. Stalls sell produce, spices, kava root and handicrafts, and entry is free. The city council also lists the Namoli Green food market as open around the clock (Lautoka City Council market page ).
Botanical Gardens
The gardens on Thomson Crescent Road, off Drasa Avenue, are free and cover about 15 acres of labelled tropical plants. A slow loop takes under half an hour. A park with play areas and toilets lies directly opposite, which makes this an easy stop in the middle of the day.
Saweni Beach
Saweni is the nearest swimming beach, 8 to 9 km toward Nadi. It is free and casual, with gentle entry into the water, but there are no facilities or changing rooms and some litter on the sand. Swim at high tide and bring your own water and shade. The Global Girmit Institute Museum is also at Saweni, so the two stops fit together.
Koroyanitu National Heritage Park
Koroyanitu is about 15 km and 30 minutes inland from Lautoka on a rough gravel road. A 4WD or an experienced taxi driver is the sensible choice, and there is no public transport. The park opens daily from 08:00 to 17:00. Two waterfall walks, Tunutunu and Savu-i-One, take about 3 hours return, and Mt Batilamu takes about 4 hours one way. Entry is about FJ$25 to 30 per person plus a guide, paid in cash at the Abaca Visitor Centre. There are no medical services on site, and the trails are slippery in heavy rain. Trail details are on the Tourism Fiji hiking page .
Sunset by the Water
Vuda Point Marina, between the airport and Lautoka, has the Boatshed Restaurant & Sunset Bar (Vuda Point Marina ). In town, the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel has a Sunset Bar and Fins Restaurant that overlook the harbour, with the restaurant open from 06:00 to 23:30.
Boats From Kings Jetty
The Tavewa Seabus leaves Kings Jetty at 07:30 (check-in 06:30) for resorts in the Yasawa Islands. It is transport to island resorts, not a day cruise. Mamanuca day trips such as Tivua and Malamala leave from Port Denarau, not Lautoka.
