Family Days Out in Lautoka
Planning With Children
Lautoka is a working port city, so family days out are mostly in the country around it. Prices are in Fijian dollars (FJ$). Rip currents occur near reefs and river mouths, so keep children in water where lifeguards are on duty and use licensed boat operators.
Sabeto Mud Pools
Children paint themselves with warm mud, let it dry in the sun and rinse off in the thermal pools. Entry is about FJ$30 per person in cash. The pools lie inland near Nadi Airport, roughly 40 to 45 minutes by road from central Lautoka.
Sleeping Giant Zipline
The zipline has 7 lines ranging from 80 to 160 m, with waterfalls along the route. It runs daily from 10:00 to 17:00. The package costs about FJ$199 for adults and about FJ$149 for children. Ask the operator about age and weight limits before you book (Sleeping Giant Zipline ).
Tivua Island Day Cruise
The Captain Cook cruise has a glass-bottom boat, snorkel talks led by a marine biologist and a Captain’s Kids Club for roughly ages 3 to 9. Child fares apply to ages 3 to 15, and children must be able to swim unassisted. The boat leaves Port Denarau at 10:00, so Lautoka families need an early start (Captain Cook Cruises ).
Botanical Gardens and the Park Opposite
The Botanical Gardens on Thomson Crescent Road are free, with labelled plants and a loop that takes under half an hour. Across the road, a park has play areas and toilets. It is the easiest free stop in town.
Garden of the Sleeping Giant
The orchid garden on Wailoko Road has a jungle walk and a lily pond. Child admission is roughly half the adult price, and 2021 press mentions a cold fruit drink at the end. Adult prices have been quoted from about FJ$18 to FJ$30, so check before you go.
Saweni Beach
Saweni has a gentle, shallow entry that suits children at high tide. There are no toilets or changing rooms and no lifeguard, so supervise closely and bring water and shade. It is 8 to 9 km toward Nadi.
Malamala Beach Club
Flotation devices are available at Malamala, and an adults-only area is kept separate. Day passes start at FJ$215 for a full day from Denarau, Nadi, Vuda or Wailoaloa, with boats leaving Port Denarau.
