What Romance Looks Like Here

Monteverde is a cool, misty cloud forest valley in the mountains, so romance here means a good dinner, private time on the trails and a few memorable rides, not beaches or spas. The options below are real but few. The town has no beach, and the nearest hot springs are around La Fortuna and Arenal, about 3 hours away by road or lake transfer.

Dinner in the Canopy

San Lucas Treetop Dining serves meals in glass rooms in the canopy, with sunset views over the Monteverde forest. Two menus are posted on sanlucas.cr :

Tribute: nine courses for $172, taxes included. Seatings are at 12:30pm for lunch, 5:00pm for sunset and 8:30pm for a late dinner.
Glass Lounge: eleven courses for $289, with one table per evening, so ask about availability early.

A Private Guided Walk

A guide for two keeps the pace slow and the group small.

Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve: a private guided walk costs 80,000 colones (about $180) for 1 to 3 people, with 20,000 colones for each extra person. Guided departures begin at 7:30am and need booking a day ahead.
Bajo del Tigre: a private guided walk, by day or at night, costs $57. Hotel transport for the night walk is $8 per person.

A Night Walk for Two

Night walks are small-group affairs. The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve’s walk starts from 6pm, lasts about 2.5 hours and is limited to 10 guests. Curi-Cancha’s walk runs from 5:30 to 7:30pm for $35, with a maximum of 9. Evenings are 12 to 14 C, so bring warm layers. Wildlife is shy and mostly nocturnal. Sightings are possible but never guaranteed, and photographers should switch off flash.

A Ride Above the Forest

The Treetopia Scenic package costs $99 and combines the Tree Tram cableway with the Sky Walk. The tram is a 1 mile round trip of about 20 minutes, reaching 5,700 ft. The Sky Walk includes a 42 m glass-floor bridge that opened in March 2026. Operations pause in strong wind or thunderstorms, so keep the day flexible.

A Slow Morning on a Coffee Farm

Cafe Monteverde Farm and Roastery runs a farm tour 400 m south of the Canitas church, open daily from 8am to 5pm. A farm-to-table lunch adds $15 and a hotel shuttle adds $7. Tastings are hands-on at this family-run farm.
