Walking Routes in Antigua and Barbuda
Antigua’s best walking is on short routes: trails around the national park at English Harbour, a flat heritage loop in St. John’s and ranger-led hikes inland. Carry water, wear sun protection and start early, because the heat builds fast. Prices are in US dollars where operators quote that way, and the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$) is pegged at US$1 to EC$2.70.
Nelson’s Dockyard trails
The national park around English Harbour has several trails:
- Fort Berkeley nature trail: short, along the harbour entrance.
- Middle Ground Trail: about 1 mile from Fort Berkeley to Pigeon Point Beach.
- Lookout Trail: between Galleon Beach and Shirley Heights. It is steep, so bring water.
- Carpenter Rock and Mermaid Gardens: the park authority confirmed trail access in 2022.
Surf crashes on the rocks along the coast, so stay back from the waterline. Park opening hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday, and the adult heritage pass is about US$15 (EC$40).
St. John’s heritage walk
This walk is self-guided and mostly flat. Start at Heritage Quay and continue to Redcliffe Quay, a restored warehouse quay. From there, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, St. John’s Cathedral and the Public Market are all close. The market is busiest on Saturday mornings. Sunday is quiet and many shops are shut.
Wallings ranger-led walks
Wallings Nature Reserve is at John Hughes in St. Mary’s. Walks are guided by a ranger, and you pay per person in US dollars:
- Button Pond: easy, 3 miles, about 1 hour, adult US$25 and child US$15.
- Signal Hill: medium, 5 miles, about 2.5 hours, adult US$30 and child US$20.
- Rendezvous Bay: hard, 14 miles, about 5 hours, adult US$50 and child US$30.
Phone 268 727 0218 to arrange a ranger.
Betty’s Hope grounds
Betty’s Hope is an open-air museum on the site of an 18th-century sugar estate worked by enslaved Africans. Walk the grounds in a quiet frame of mind. One of the two windmill towers is restored, the Great House is a ruin and the visitor centre is in the former cotton-house store. The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda runs it. Check hours before you go.
Boggy Peak
Boggy Peak, at 402 m, can be climbed on foot, and walkers commonly allow about 1.5 to 2 hours round trip. Start in the cooler early morning and carry plenty of water.
Route planning
No walking route links Dickenson Bay on the north-west coast to Darkwood Beach on the south-west coast, so use a taxi between them. Agree the fare and the currency with the driver before you set off.
