Family Activities in Uganda by Age
Travel advisory, as of October 2026: the US State Department lists Uganda at Level 4, Do Not Travel; it raised the level in May 2026 during an Ebola outbreak that Uganda declared over in late August 2026, and it also cites crime, terrorism and unrest. The UK FCDO warns that attacks are very likely, including in national parks. The Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023 makes same-sex sexual activity illegal. Families should read the FCDO regional risks page and the US advisory , check current health advice and insure the full itinerary.
Plan Around Age Limits
Two headline experiences have firm minimum ages. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi and Mgahinga is for ages 15 and over, and no exceptions should be assumed. Chimpanzee tracking in Kibale has a minimum age of 12, with groups capped at 8 and about an hour spent with the animals. Families with younger children can still fill several days with the options below. Malaria risk applies across the country, so talk to a travel clinic about protection for every family member.
Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, Entebbe
The centre, often called Entebbe Zoo, is the easiest family stop near the airport. It is open daily from about 08:00 to 18:00, and non-resident tickets are about USD 15 for adults and USD 10 for children. Chimpanzees, lions and a giraffe platform are the main draws, according to operator pages. A Behind the Scenes visit is an extra that must be booked ahead. Next door, the Entebbe Botanical Gardens have lakeside lawns and wild black-and-white colobus and vervet monkeys. Keep food away from them and do not feed them.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary
Ziwa is flat, and the rhino walk takes about one hour, which suits children who can walk steadily. You track southern white rhinos on foot with an armed ranger. Child pricing exists, so ask the sanctuary when you book. It is roughly three hours each way from Kampala.
Lake Mburo National Park
Lake Mburo offers game drives and a boat cruise, with zebra, impala, eland and reintroduced giraffes. It is not free of dangerous animals: buffalo, hippo and leopard live there. Walks are only allowed with an armed UWA ranger, and children should stay close to the group. Entry is about USD 40 for an adult.
Ngamba Island
Boats for the chimpanzee sanctuary leave Entebbe at 09:00 and 12:45, and the crossing takes about 45 minutes by speedboat. The official page gives no child rules, so ask when you book at chimpanzeetrust.org .
On the Water
- Adrift runs a family rafting trip, a Grade 3 style outing near Jinja; confirm the minimum age with them. Grade 5 trips are typically for ages 16 and over.
- Lake Bunyonyi has canoe and island trips. Children should wear lifejackets, and you should ask your lodge about swimming.
- Do not swim in Lake Victoria or the Nile. Bilharzia, hippos and crocodiles are the risk.
Bigodi Wetland Walk
The community-run Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, on the edge of Kibale, has a boardwalk and trail walk of roughly 3 hours. Walks start around 07:30 and 15:00. Children below the chimp-tracking age can join and look for monkeys and birds.
Practical Notes
Journeys are long and bumpy, so limit each family stage to one or two driving hours when you can. FCDO advises against travelling outside main towns after dark. Safari vehicles are 4x4s with pop-up roofs, which give younger children a good view.
