Island Tours and Attractions in Antigua
Guided attractions in Antigua fall into a few groups: boat tours to the sandbars and islets of the north-east, a zip-line tour inland, a full day on Barbuda, and heritage visits around English Harbour and the former sugar estates. Prices below are in US dollars, the way operators and resellers usually quote them, and the local currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar (EC$2.70 to US$1). Confirm the current price and pick-up arrangements when you book.
Stingray City and Laviscount Island
Stingray City Antigua is a boat-led sandbar tour from Seatons Village on the north-east coast, where you stand in waist-deep water beside southern stingrays while guides feed them squid. Follow the guides’ rules on touching. A combination tour adds Laviscount Island, which has Aldabra tortoises and macaws, and one operator lists the combination at about US$150.
Catamaran day sails
Wadadli Cats is a catamaran company running day sails to Bird Island and Cades Reef, as well as circumnavigation trips around Antigua. Expect 6 to 7 hours on board. A Friday Bird Island trip has been priced at US$95 for adults and US$48 for children.
Rainforest canopy tour
The Antigua Rainforest Canopy Tour is on Fig Tree Drive, just past John Hughes village. Departures are Monday to Saturday at 9am, 10am and 11am. The route has zip lines, suspension bridges and rope obstacles, and reseller prices run from about US$99 to US$158.
Barbuda with Hillside Tours
Sea Bridge Ferries recommends Hillside Tours for a guided day on Barbuda. The usual route takes in the frigate bird colony at Codrington Lagoon, the caves at Two Foot Bay and the pink-sand beaches, with lunch at Hillside View Bar and Grill at Two Foot Bay. Contact is through Sea Bridge, and +1 268 464 5012 is the number given for Hillside Tours. The ferry crossing takes about 90 minutes each way, with one-way adult fares from about US$65. The frigate colony holds about 2,500 pairs and is the largest magnificent frigatebird colony in the Caribbean. Sailings are cancelled in rough weather.
Nelson’s Dockyard and Shirley Heights
Cruise-port tours often combine Nelson’s Dockyard National Park with Shirley Heights, and the park pass is usually included in the price. If you go independently, the adult heritage pass is about US$15 (EC$40), and the park lists opening hours of 8am to 5pm, Monday to Saturday. The Dockyard is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2016.
Betty’s Hope
Betty’s Hope was an 18th-century sugar estate worked by enslaved Africans. The Codrington family held it from 1674 to 1944, and 393 enslaved people were recorded there in 1680. Today one of the two windmill towers is restored, the Great House is a ruin, and a visitor centre in the old cotton-house store explains the estate. The Museum of Antigua and Barbuda runs the site. Visit it as a place of remembrance and ask about opening hours before you drive out.
Wadadli Animal Nature Park
This animal park is at Lower Lyons in Saint Philip, near Potworks Dam, with monkeys, deer, peacocks, parrots and iguanas. Booking is required 48 hours ahead on 268 736 2895, and guided visits should be confirmed before you go.
